First let’s start with the bottom of the table, earlier in the season I thought that Fulham had come up a season early and still had some building to do in the squad. Similar with West Brom who I didn’t think were ready for a challenge in the Premier League, having both sides being relegated. Although I was off the mark on the Aston Villa relegation, who continued their good form from the end of the 2019/20 season when they had to fight for their place in the Premier League. The additions of Emiliano Martínez and Matty Cash were huge for Dean Smith this season, as well as keeping Jack Grealish at the club last summer.
In terms of the middle of the table, I had Leeds finishing outside the top 10 - as much as I admire Marcelo Bielsa's work I felt that Leeds needed a season before breaking into the top 10. But after a strong end to the season, Bielsa’s men finished ahead of Everton and just behind Arsenal in 9th.

Moving to the top of the table, I predicted the right top 4, but just got it wrong on the title winners as I had Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool lifting the title ahead of Man City. Liverpool did extremely well to finish in the top 4 and is something that I called when we did our most recent Top 4 prediction. Even though they lost their 3 starting centre backs, Liverpool conceded just 42 goals - the 4th best defensive record in the league.

I didn’t think City’s summer signings would make the difference and at the time of recording, they didn’t as they’d only signed Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres. But the addition of Ruben Dias combined with Liverpool losing their defensive unit was a huge swing in balance and City capitalised.
They also had Ilkay Gundogan step up who was basically a new signing given the improved level that he played at.
I think if it were a normal season for Liverpool and with the summer signings, Man Utd would have finished 3rd. The signing of Alex Telles did give United a starting left back, it just turned out Luke Shaw needed the competition. Luke Shaw has really emerged as a top full back this season with only Trent Alexander-Arnold (74) creating more chances than the United man (69). Marcus Rashford & Bruno Fernandes continued their excellence, Mason Greenwood continued to develop and Edinson Cavani announced himself with an excellent debut campaign for a 34 year old, being directly involved in a goal every 88 minutes.
