Stephen Fry Announces Hà Ánh Phượng As A Top 10 Finalist For The Global Teacher Prize 2020

Watch Stephen Fry announce Vietnamese teacher Ha Anh Phuong as the final top 10 finalist for The Global Teacher Prize 2020. Ten teachers in ten weeks. They each deserve their moment in the spotlight.

Now, more than ever, we must shine a light on the world’s teachers.

Ha Anh Phuong, who teaches at Huong Can High School, Phu Tho province, Vietnam, was shortlisted for the Global Teacher Prize 2020, after being selected from over 12,000 nominations and applications from over 140 countries around the world.

Ha Anh Phuong works in a remote, mountainous high school where more than 90 per cent of her students are ethnic minorities aged 15 to 18 and have little chance to practice English. She introduced a borderless classroom model, where through technology her students now connect to schools all over the world, helping to improve their English, confidence and cultural awareness. Just as adept at STEM disciplines, she has created innovative English courses, often designing lessons with programming tools such as Quizizz, Flipgrid, Plickers and Kahoot and provides activities for children to learn English outside the classroom.

Known as the “4.0 innovative teacher” she also collaborates with other English teachers in Asia, Africa, the U.S. and Europe to connect her ethnic minority students with their students via Skype and Zoom and also administers a Facebook group to share these experiences in professional development activities as a global teacher. She has inspired many Vietnamese teachers and helped create a new trend to teach English in Vietnam.
