Today is January 1, 2020. A new year has ushered in. Revellers all across the world are bidding farewell to a year and a decade that is known for the rise of PM Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party, Donald Trump, MeToo Movement, end of ISIS, Brexit and many more.

India, in particular, witnessed a 'quantum leap' in the past decade, where it saw the emergence of Narendra Modi as a global leader. ISRO also made it to the list of the top events that defined the decade with its Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan-2 space missions.

At the stroke of the midnight hour on Jully 1, 2017, India's parliament launched the historic Goods and Services Tax or GST, unifying India as "one nation, one tax, one market", ending dozens of state taxes and levies and bringing goods and services with a common tax slab across the nation.

The decade was also marked by demonetisation, wherein the PM Modi government banned the Rs 500 and 1,000 currency notes from November 8, 2016.

The decade also witnessed many shockers, including, the 2012 Nirbhaya horror and the recent Hyderabad Vet Incident, which sparked national outrage.

In the world of defence, India India conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir in September 2016 in retaliation to the 2016 terror attack carried out by Pakistani terrorists on a military camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri.

Balakot airstrike was conducted by India in the early morning hours of February 26, 2019, when the Indian Air Force had struck the Jaish-e-Mohammed's Balakot training camp deep inside Pakistani territory, using Mirage 2000 fighters armed with SPICE 2000 satellite-guided bombs.


The country's top court, the Supreme Court, also delivered some landmark judgments in the past decade, including the Sabarimala verdict, Triple Talaq verdict, Article 377, Ayodhya Land dispute.

Other important events that marked the decade were the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir and the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

In the world of sports, the Indian Cricket team became the first home nation to win a World Cup when they defeated Sri Lanka in the final at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. It was an emotional journey for India as it was Sachin Tendulkar's final appearance in cricket's biggest extravaganza.

Also, cricket legend and master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who defined cricket for all Indians, bid farewell after serving the nation for 24 years.
