Teaching English Tips: How to Create Great Speaking Activities for Grammar and Vocabulary
Description
The goal of any English class is for your students to actually use the language you want in dynamic, natural language situations. This is hard to do! Why are your students so quiet all of the time? Usually, it's because you haven't created a solid activation (speaking activity) for them to follow.
In this teaching English tips video, we go over all of the qualities and steps for making great grammar and vocabulary activations.
What's an activation and how is it different than just a regular speaking activity? Activations are speaking (or writing) activities that use the specific language you've taught in your class. If the focus of your lesson is a grammar point, you want them to use that grammar point in a natural-sounding speaking activity. The same goes for new vocab. The rule is that everything leads up to your final activity (your activation). Plan your activation first and have the rest of your lesson get you to that language goal.
At The Language House TEFL, we are all about getting our teachers to create wonderful roleplays, debates and discussions. Learning a language is more than just doing exercises. In real-life, our English students have to go out into the world and use the language we teach them to survive.
The more realistic we can make these speaking activities, the more useful they will be for our students.
