PROBABILITY the odds or chance of something happening from a random pick, selection, simulation, draw, roll, etc. Spinner, Dice, Coin, Cards, Bag of Marbles, etc. Simple Event means it is a one time event, like rolling once, spinning once, flipping once. A question will ask the probability of something happening, that is usually called the favorable outcome. Probability of any event equals the number of favorable outcomes divided by the total possible number of outcomes. P(an event) = favorable outcomes OVER total possible outcomes. For example: P(rolling a 5 on 6 sided die) = 1 wanted outcome / 6 possible outcomes. Sometimes they will ask you the probability of getting a factor or divisor of a number. Or they could ask for EVENS (2, 4, 6, 8, etc) or ODDS (1, 3, 5, 7, etc). A compliment is asking for the opposite or remaining possible outcomes. So on ONE roll of a dice, P(5) = 1/6, but its compliment equals all the other possibilities, (1, 2, 3, 4, 6) so = 5/6.
EXPERIMENTAL PROBABILITY is the actual results from experiments or trials or items of random chance. Theoretical is what should happen statistically. Like a dice die has a 1 in 6 chance of rolling a 3. so if i roll 60 times there should be 10 of each number theoretically. The more times we do the experiment, the more likely the results will become closer to what theoretically SHOULD happen for outcomes.
Experimental often tells you after an experiment a color or number happened so many times. You can make a tallie table for all the results. Then they ask based on these results and outcomes, how many times would green happen if spun spinner 100 more times, etc. Games or EVENTS of random chance might include a dice die or flipping a coin spinning a spinner choosing a card, picking a marble out of a bag. These are all common events used in math probability problems.
COMPOUND PROBABILITY is when they want both or two different things / events / outcomes to happen, often using the word AND. My class, I say AND means Add Not Do in your best Yoda voice. Add Not Do young Jedi, Now must you Multiply. If a problem says what are the chances of getting red OR blue, then you ADD the two numbers representing the number of reds or blues in the selection pool or SAMPLE SPACE ) total amount of different possibilities or outcomes. So "OR" you add the #s together. BUT "AND" the word "AND" or "both" meaning they want two outcomes to BOTH happen, red AND blue...thet means two events, two dice, two spinners, two coins, or a coin and a spinner. there will be two games of chance or randoms events. and they want whatever two BOTH outcomes. So example we spin a spinner twice and want P(red AND blue) the probability of spinning red and then blue... there is 1 red and 2 blue on a spinner with 10 different slices of varying colors. So 1/10 times 2/10 = 2/100 or simplify by dividing top and bottom by 2, and the compound probability = 1/50
