10. Climate Crisis

Okay, we’re going to start this video off with something we definitely know could end the world, because it sort of already is. I am of course talking about the climate crisis that we are currently experiencing. Now, whether you believe it’s caused by the influence of the human race or not, the rapidly increasing temperatures on Planet Earth are a pretty big deal.

There are a ton of ways a warming climate could knock us all off this mortal chain. Rising sea levels caused by ice melting will wash away low lying land and islands. Much warmer equatorial temperatures will lead to widespread desertification and loss of farming abilities. The oceans themselves will become too hot to support life, cutting off yet another major source of food and wiping out large areas of underwater oxygen production. Eventually, the planet will just become too hot for human life to be sustained on the surface, and slowly but surely the world will come grinding to an inevitable halt for humanity.

9. The Bees are Disappearing

Yup, that’s right, the bees are disappearing! It’s actually quite shocking to see quite how quickly they’re disappearing, too. Wild and domesticated honeybees perform about 80 per cent of all pollination across the world. That doesn’t just include pretty flowers, but fruits, nuts and vegetables too. In fact, around seventy of the top 100 human food crops, which are responsible for around 90 per cent of the world’s nutrition, are all pollinated by bees. Suffice it to say, they’re pretty important… and they’re disappearing.

The state of worldwide bee colony collapse has always been portrayed as a bit of a mystery by certain industries and mainstream media reporters. But the truth of the matter is… well, a complex combination of factors. Global Warming and Drought play their part, but so do pesticides, habitat destruction, air pollution and much more. You might be scared of bees, they might freak you out when they go bumbling past doing their jobs of pollinating plants, but in truth, they are vitally important and need to be protected perhaps above any other species on the planet. We’re running out of time to save the bees, some countries are doing better than others, and if they disappear altogether… we might too.

8. An Asteroid Impact

While it might be hard to rationalise sometimes, we are actually in space. Yes, yes we’re on a planet so we aren’t technically IN space, but the planet that we are on is spinning through the universe, orbiting a sun. To put it simply, space isn’t exactly the most safe of places to exist. 66-million years ago all life on Planet Earth was almost put to a stop by a colossal asteroid smacking into the planet. Bye Bye dinosaurs, hello new age ushering in the rise of the mammal.

NASA believes that one of the biggest threats to human life is an eventual asteroid impact. History says that, once every 100 million or so years, Earth will come into contact with an asteroid that has the potential to trigger a global extinction level event. If it isn’t the impact itself, then it’ll be the dust thrown up into the atmosphere of the planet that will do it. It might not happen any time soon, but really every day is a roll of the dice. NASA and other space agencies across the world can’t even detect a lot of these potential planet enders. Even if they could, we currently have no answer to them. If an Asteroid is in the path of our orbit, then there’s no way we could move it.

7. Artificial Intelligence

Two ways AI could end the human race. First would be, some CEO somewhere tells an AI to figure out how to maximize their companies profits, and then gives it the power to just do what it thinks is best. Well, what if it thinks the best thing to do is tank the economy, or target some people to be taken out of the picture. Kinda less good, right? Just an AI, doing what it’s told… and not being aware of potential other consequences because it was never programmed to.

The second way? Hehe. Okay. Similar scenario, a startup company designs an AI to help them influence people to do the things that they want. These systems would, at first, make themselves useful, help make some money for themselves and their owners. It’d all be groovy. But eventually, the algorithms in the AI might just care a little too much about influence. Some natural disaster happens, a major fight between countries. A period of vulnerability for humans. Then artificial systems start to misbehave and compound whatever happening.
