The 10 Richest Women In The World
Men have been known to dominate the famous Forbes list of the richest people in the world. In fact, the phrase "richest in the world" will invoke names like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and a host of others – all male. Does it mean there are no women worthy of mention among the world's richest?
Far from it.
There are just enough of female heavy hitters in the world of billionaires. And in today’s video, our focus is on the first ten.
#10 Gina Rinehart
Gina Rinehart is Australia’s richest person with a net worth of $15.5 billion according to Forbes. Her fortunes came from the mining industry under her firm, Hancock Prospecting named after her late father Lang Hancock.
Hancock Prospecting has stakes and hence gets royalties from iron ore mines. According to Forbes, a good chunk of Gina’s fortune came from the Roy Hill mining which started shipments to Asia in 2015, barely half a decade ago.
Besides iron ore mining, Ms. Rinehart also has interests in agriculture and owns a healthy portfolio of properties across the country. In agriculture, she is the third-largest cattle producer in Australia.
While she inherited the company from her father, it’s mainly her business genius that has seen her net worth soar. At the time she took over, Hancock Prospecting was way worse off financially. It was plagued by debts and was close to being seized.
Today thanks to her turning around the company, she’s the wealthiest Australian and among the top 100 richest people in the world.
Away from the business world, she provides financial support for Australian Olympic teams according to Bloomberg.
#9 Iris Fontbona
Chilean Iris Fontbona is another mining mogul on this list. Ms. Iris took over after her husband, Andronico Luksic, succumbed to cancer in 2005.
At the time of his death, Mr. Andronio had built immense wealth in the mining and brewery industries both of which his sons and wife run up to today. So far, only two of his sons – Jean-Paul and Andronico – remain. The third one, Guillermo, died of cancer in 2013 just like his father.
The family owns a controlling share in Antofagasta Plc. The company, in turn, owns a vast amount of copper mines in Chile, making it the 7th largest copper producer in the world. The behemoth also trades on the London Stock Exchange.
Besides Antofagasta, the family also has a majority stake in Quinenco with its interests spread across three sectors, namely banking, manufacturing, and beer.
Both of the companies are headed by the two sons making the family the wealthiest in the country. And that means Iris Fontbona the richest person in Chile.
Ms. Iris has a net worth of $14.2 as per Forbes’ estimations.
#8 Abigail Johnson
Abigail Johnson is termed as the most powerful woman in finance by Bloomberg. She’s the chairperson of Fidelity Investments, a company that manages assets worth $2.7 trillion. The mutual fund managing giant was founded by her grandfather, Edward Johnson II back in 1946.
Fidelity is quite a diverse financial institution. It oversees an extensive pool of mutual funds, deals in index funds, operates a brokerage firm, provides fund distribution and investment advice and so on. The company also got bitten by the cryptocurrency bug and launched a trading platform in 2018 through which institutional investors can trade bitcoin and ether.
The company has also recently branched into media with its press under the name Fidelity Press. It will be interesting to see how this fairly new venture impacts the company’s bottom line.
Abigail Johnson had on and off stints at the company before 2014. She used to come over during holidays in the summer and officially joined the company in 1988 as an analyst after her M.B.A at Harvard.
She stepped in for her father as the CEO in 2014, a position she held for close to two years. In2016, she became chairman.
Abby, as she’s fondly referred to at the company’s headquarters in Boston, owns 24.5% of Fidelity Investments’ shares. This gives her a net worth of $16.2 billion according to Forbes.
#7 Laurene Powell Jobs
Laurene Powell Jobs is the widow of the late tech mogul Steve Jobs.
When he died of pancreatic cancer in 2011, Jobs left a mark with his revolutionary ideas in entertainment, computer, and wireless industries. And the mark brought considerable financial rewards his way having left a nest egg totaling up to $7 billion at the time of his death.
A huge percentage of this wealth was from Disney where he owned over $4 billion worth of the stock – making him the largest individual shareholder at the time.
This wealth was passed to Laurene, instantly raising her profile in the billionaire circles. Besides Disney and Apple, Mrs. Jobs has grabbed a few more additional stakes in various companies.
