The Brotherhood Of Man - United We Stand (1970)
Description
Brotherhood of Man are a British pop group who achieved major successes in the 1970s.
Created in 1969 by songwriter and record producer Tony Hiller (1927-2018), Brotherhood Of Man was initially a studio creation for a frequently-changing line-up of session singers. Songs were released on the DERAM-label; their first 45, 'Love One Another' was released in October ... and sunk without a trace.
But the second release, 'United We Stand, did chart. And became a worldwide hit. In February 1970 the song rocketed up the UK charts 40-19-10, but then disappointingly started falling down after. At the time the session singers wereTony Burrows and Sunny Leslie singing the solo parts and Roger Greenaway, John Goodison and Sue Glover doing the background vocals. John Goodison. who sadly died in 1995, was co-writer with Hiller. Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway was also a songwriter and had co-written countless hits for The Fortunes, Blue Mink, Whistling Jack Smith, White Plains and The Hollies. Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie sang together as a duo and released a few 45s. Tony Burrows was a well-known session singer, performing in various line-ups on hit singles such as 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes' by Edison Lighthouse, topping the charts same week as 'United We Stand' reached #10. The anthem-like single also became a Top 20 hit in the UK, Canada, Australia and US.
Same styled follow-up single 'Where Are You Going To My Love' reached #22, Summer 1970. By the end of the year 'This Boy' was released, but failed to impress, just as a number of subsequent single releases. Goodison left the group in 1971 and was replaced by American singer Hal Atkinson, Greenaway left soon after and was replaced by Russell Stone. They had one more minor hit in the US in 1971, 'Reach Out Your Hand', but hits dried up. DERAM waived them goodbye and divided they fell.
But Hiller kept holding on, in 1972 he created a complete new line up of the band. Now consisting of four: first Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden, Martin Lee were hired and later Sandra Stevens was added. Their 1972-73 releases struggled. But 'Lady' and 'Kiss Me Kiss You Baby' charted in Europe, 1974-75, in Belgium and The Netherlands.
Their 'Song For Europe' entry, the Hiller-Sheridan-Lee witten 'Save All Your Kisses For Me' won the Eurovision Songcontest of 1976 and peaked at #1 for six weeks in the UK and topped charts in many other countries. The quartet continued their success with a string of hit songs including two more UK chart-toppers Angelo (1977) and Figaro (1978).
Under this line-up The Brotherhood Of Man is still on, performing shows throughout Europe. Altogether, they have released 16 studio albums, with worldwide sales topping 15 million records. Brotherhood of Man still find themselves in demand on both the Nostalgia and gay circuit.
The video as shown here is of a live performance. I have added cd-audio to optimize sound quality. Getting things lip-synchonized was quite a challenge, but I am pleased with the results. Hope you too! Enjoy!
