The Fascinating Relationship between Bacteria, Genes, the Microbiome and Our Immune Systems
Description
Your Immune System is in Your Microbiome! Our immune system is a fascinating system because 80% of it is in our digestive tract and our digestive tract, every square millimeter of it, is covered with microbes.

One of the major roles of the microbiome is protection. I think you know that we cannot overstate the importance of understanding that our genes really don't change a whole lot. That means are genes today that exist within ourselves, that code for everything, are the same genes that humans, hundreds of thousands of years ago, even up to a couple million years ago, were utilizing to function in that environment.
The adaptations that we've acquired from that time up to now aren't really reflected in our own genes but are reflected in other gene pools within our system, most of which are contained within the microbiome.
Most people have probably heard that the genetic difference between a human and a chimpanzee is minuscule. It’s just a couple of percent difference in our genetics yet we are so different as a species in so many different ways.
So the vast majority of our functionality on a day-to-day basis for things that make us human, and the defense mechanisms that we have, are contained within this massive gene pool that exists within our microbiome. The estimates are around 150 times more genetic material in our microbiome than there is human DNA in our system!
That's really important for everyone to understand. We are geeking out but it makes so much sense in terms of how to protect yourself and your family. There are 100 to 150 times more genes inside our body from bacteria, viruses, yeast, etc. There are 150 times more genes of those guys than there are of the human genes.
It’s mind-boggling to think about it. Some estimates are more than 90% of all of the metabolic and biochemical functions that occur in our body are coded for by THOSE genes, NOT by our own.
We have a very limited set of genetic material. We’ve got half the jeans as a rice plant does and we've got half the genes of an earthworm. What makes us so sophisticated, which has accelerated us to the top of the food chain and top of the evolutionary ladder, is this amazing gene pool within the microbiome that we can contain and we've learned to utilize it. That's a really important aspect of it.
Now, talking about defense and protection, there's only one major system in our body to defend us from things that come in from the outside that seek to maybe harm us is our immune system.
Our immune system is a fascinating system because 80% of it is in our digestive tract and our digestive tract every square millimeter is covered with microbes. So imagine the communication of the relationship between the microbiome and the immune system where all of your immune tissue - these tissues and cells that are supposed to be able to detect friend from foe, bad bacteria from good bacteria, viruses that are pathogenic versus your commensal viruses’ and food particles that are friendly that they shouldn't be attacking; all of these detections that they have to do…they are doing that covered in the sea of microbes!
So if you’re a geek like Kiran and me, you're drooling! It is amazing. All these bacteria that are really not human, it’s bacteria, and the genes in that bacteria are working together to protect us! 70 to 80% of the entire immune system is this environment - inside our gut.
When you get that, then you understand how important it is to have a great microbiome and diversity of the microbiome to be healthy and keep your immune system running optimally.
