As many cruisers know, the usual start of the Alaska cruise season is now upon us. With all of the cruise cancellations and suspensions of service, many have asked if ships will sail in the region this year. So, to help answer all the questions, we have put together this comprehensive post on How the Coronavirus is Impacting the Alaska Cruise Season this year.

In our look of how COVID-19 is impacting cruises to Alaska, we examine how all the major cruise lines are handling the global health crisis. For the most part, cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line plan to sail in the region starting July 1st.

This July 1st date is mainly driven by the Canadian government’s current ban on cruise ships carrying more than 500 passengers and crew from entering the country’s waterways and ports. Of course, the government could extend this ban further into the summer impacting the Alaska cruise season even further.

While most cruise lines are still planning to cruise, many have cutback on operations. The popular Alaska cruise line, Princess Cruises, has removed several ships from the region this year. The cruise line has also cancelled land and sea tours for the entire season. Currently, only two ships in the fleet will offer round-trip Alaska cruises from Seattle, WA.

Similarly, Holland America Line has removed 5 of its 7 ships from Alaska. Other cruise lines have cancelled trips to Alaska completely in 2020 including Windstar Cruises and Cunard Line.

Many factors will impact the official start of the Alaska cruise season, including how the pandemic progresses through the summer, as well as the state of Alaska’s decisions on opening up the economy. We continue to monitor all of the cruise line decisions and current travel restrictions to determine if the Alaska 2020 cruise season will be cancelled due to the Coronavirus.
