The mansion Ghislaine Maxwell was hiding in when she was arrested

The hunt for Ghislaine Maxwell is finally over. Rumours had abounded that she was holed up at a retreat in Brazil, or possibly at a chateau in the south of France or a "safe house" in Israel.

But on Thursday, the joint forces of the FBI and the New York Police Department swooped, detaining Ms Maxwell, the daughter of the disgraced tycoon Robert Maxwell and a close friend of the Duke of York, at her mansion – a "gorgeous property", as investigators called it – in Bradford, New Hampshire.
