1. What is a rainforest? It’s a tropical woodland with an annual rainfall of at least 100 inches (254 centimeters) These incredible places cover only 6% of the Earth's surface but yet they contain MORE THAN 1/2 of the world's plant and animal species! Rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems.
2. Rainforests basically have four layers. EMERGENT LAYER, CANOPY LAYER, UNDERSTORY LAYER, FOREST FLOOR
3. Rainforests are the source of many items that we all use in our own homes! We eat several foods from the rainforest and many medicines are made from ingredients found only in these areas.
4. Rainforests are a powerful natural climate solution. Not only do they regulate global temperatures, they also cool and regulate local micro-climates and limit the Earth’s reflectivity—which in turn stabilizes ocean currents, wind, and rainfall patterns.
5. A swath of rainforest the size of 40 football fields disappears each minute. According to Global Forest Watch, our planet loses tropical forestland equivalent to the size of Bangladesh is every year. In 2017 alone, we lost 15.8 million hectares of tropical forests; all told, humans have destroyed nearly half of the world’s original forest cover.
6. Tropical forests have become a net carbon emitters. However, we cannot afford to give up on tropical forests. Restoring them and their ability to sequester carbon is one of several critical steps we must take to address our global climate crisis.
7. The biggest rainforest in Australia is Daintree Rainforest. It’s estimated to be at least 180 million years old. This would make Daintree the world's oldest tropical rainforest. It’s so old that it predates the Amazon Rainforest by tens of millions of years.
8. In the 1980s Daintree Rainforest was threatened by logging and other activities. Despite its protection as a World Heritage Site there are still threats to Daintree Rainforest including climate change, the introduction of feral animals into the rainforest, weed growth, and development of residential areas which brings a whole new set of problems into the ecosystem.
9. THREATS OF DEFORESTATION
Deforestation is a major threat to the Daintree Rainforest. Trees are getting cut down every single day! Animals and their habitats are getting affected by this condition. This is outrageous and it needs to stop!
10. You can help conserve rainforests by choosing products that bear the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal(Hint: just #FollowTheFrog!). The Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Standard includes requirements designed to protect standing forests, including native forest set-asides for large farms and practices that nurture soil health and increase productivity on existing farmland (thereby reducing pressure to expand by cutting down forests).
