The Pulse - Eat Right, India
Description
In a few weeks from now, chips, packaged juices, burgers, pizzas, samosas and other kinds of junk food will be banned in schools across the country. Food business operators won't be allowed to advertise junk food, give free samples or even put banners inside schools and within 50 meters of school campuses. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has framed Food Safety and Standards (Safe food and healthy diets for School children) regulations 2019 to clamp down on consumption of unhealthy food by school children, at the same time encouraging them to consume only safe and wholesome food. The food regulator has proposed that school authorities adopt a comprehensive programme for promoting safe food and healthy diets among school children. And for this, the school campus must be converted into 'Eat Right School', focusing on safe and healthy food, local and seasonal food and no food waste. Also, the school authorities would have to ensure that food business operators supplying prepared meals in the premises are on the basis of general guidance provided in the regulation. It also calls for periodic engagement of nutritionists and dietitians by the school administration to assist in the preparation of the menu for the children... The proposal is open to views and suggestions and is likely to be implemented soon...
