Now we've got a decision to make here as to whether or not we take this source's source at his word, because usually, a report like this would come from someone considered to be a more credible source, someone like Woj or Shams. Some people have a hard time believing that a local NBL reporter in Australia, would be the first to get hold of the word what could potentially be one of the biggest sneaker endorsements of all time. I could've just pumped out that video after the tweet, and took all the views from the story. But it's more important to me to get the facts right first and foremost, So I decided to do a little bit of digging on the reporter and came to discover, that he isn't the most reliable source. Earlier in the year he said that Shaun Livingston was signing with the Perth Wildcats as apart of the NBL's old stars program, and months later I don't know about you guys but I don't see Shaun Livingston playing in the NBL. A more reliable NBL source Olgun Oluc a senior basketball reporter at fox sports Australia, quoted a tweet breaking the news that said. Do we have any reason to believe this is true, he also replied to comment saying it wouldn't be the first time that presumably the reporter Corey Williams, had made up a story.
Now while this specific report may or may not be true, I guess don't know yet. LaMelo signing a 100 million dollar sneaker deal really isn't as unrealistic as it sounds. Zion Williamson received a deal last year worth up to 75 million. And regardless of what ESPN might tell you, Lamelo is the highest-profile pre-NBA player in the history of the sport. No prospect has ever come into the league as well known and generated the hype that Lamelo has. He is a global star, who sports media outlets have been milking and covering for years. LaMelo has 5.3 million Instagram followers, that's more than some NBA all-stars. In fact, Lamelo right now is in the top 10 in the entire NBA, for the largest following on social media. On top of that, he's a global superstar, having starred in Lithuania, overseas in the JBA world tour and now setting records in Australia. He's the ultimate US trendsetter who has become one of the world's most renowned prospects, without benefiting off the exposure to the NCAA.
Now I believe there is probably some truth to what Corey is saying because he is after all well connected with the NBL and I doubt he would've just made this all up. I think whether it be from directly from the ball family or some else, he got word about this 100 million offer and jumped the gun to be the first to break it. What's interesting is well that days before this story broke, Lavar said that unless Lamelo's return to the Hawks this season isn't guaranteed, and unless he's fully healthy hasn't promised a return to the court this season. Now with his status as a lottery pick already assured, could that be a strategic move from the ball's to protect that 100 million offer, assuring that he won't get injured. Let's also factor in that Melo took an extended break from social media without explanation, now I could see one of the smaller sneaker brands, taking a gamble on Lamelo for the 100 million. And making him the face of their brand, similar to what Under Armour is doing with Curry, new balance with kawhi, etc. Because let's say that 100 million is paid over 7 years, that would mean they pay Melo something along the lines of 14 million a year. That might be a risk worth taking, because if Lamelo were to go on and become an NBA superstar. Then signing him long term for 100 million would be an absolute steal, bear in mind that point guards traditionally sell the most shoes. So considering how marketable lamelo is unless he is the biggest bust in NBA history. Fans will buy his shoes, we could some sort of co-branding deal also, I don't know how likely it is that a major sneaker company partners with BBB, but I could see a scenario where Lamelo maintains his the MB1 brand and look like a part of the deal.
