TikTok and Employer Branding - Episode 2 (Choose your character)

Those familiar with gaming will know about the concept of #characterselect and #chooseyourcharacter - the opportunity to personalise and assign attributes to one’s character in-game. Welcome to episode 2 of the TikTok and EmployerBranding series.

It’s useful to follow trends on TikTok. One involves TikTokers outlining the attributes of the types of people they know, or revealing their own character to others. This episode shares some career-related examples, all set to a sample of Frank Ocean’s Chanel.

Though it’s great to see authenticity, some employers may be concerned how their brand is represented. TikTok appears to be a cathartic outlet for many jobholders - and there are examples of people complaining about managers, colleagues and customers. Some are wearing a work uniform and/or dancing and singing in the workplace to profanity-ridden lyrics. Employers are well-advised to check how their brand is represented, and appraise current social media policies. One opportunity is to co-create content with employees.
