Hello Displorers, Welcome back to another exciting video and thanks for watching, In this video, we shall be looking at the Top 10 most successful African Countries at the Olympics. The Olympics Games are leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The first Games held under the auspices of the IOC was hosted in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens in 1896. The Games brought together 14 nations and 241 athletes who competed in 43 events.The Olympic Games are considered the world's foremost sports competition with more than 200 nations participating. The Olympic Games are held every four years, with the Summer and Winter Games alternating by occurring every four years but two years apart. Some of the First African countries to make it at the Olympics was south Africa and Egypt in 1904, Since then Almost every single country in Africa has participated at the event although some African countries have performed more than other. In this video, We shall be focusing on the summer Olympic since almost no African country partakes at the winter Olympics for obvious reasons.

Although most African countries are not very successful at the Olympics, there are however a few countries that stand out and always have the honor of their National Anthems being played at the event. So, Without any Further ado, here are the Top 10 Most successful African countries at the Summer Olympic games.
10. Uganda – 7 Medals
Uganda first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics. Uganda has never competed at the Winter Olympic Games. All together Uganda has Participated at the Olympics 15 times and have won a total of Seven Medals, 2 gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze. They won their very first gold medal at the 1972 edition that took place in Munich, Germany. The medal was won by John Akii Bua at the Men’s 400m Hurdle. Stephen kiprotich won the second gold medal for men’s Marathon at the 2012 edition in London. The other medals were won in the category of boxing. Uganda has never participated at the winter Olympics.
9. Zimbabwe – 8 Medals
Zimbabwe participated for the first time at the Olympic Games under its current name in 1980, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then. Previously, it competed at the Games under the name Rhodesia in 1928, 1960 and 1964. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi marked Zimbabwe's first participation at the Winter Olympic Games, with Oskar Hauser, the Austrian born Zimbabwean, participating in the biathlon.
Zimbabwean athletes have won a total of eight medals – three golds, four silvers and one bronze – in two sports. Seven medals were won by swimmer Kirsty Coventry in 2004 and 2008; the remaining medal was the result of a victory by the women's national field hockey team in 1980. Zimbabwe won its very first gold medal at the 1980 edition in Moscow and he second at the 2008 edition in Beijing. The won was won by the field Hockey team and Kristy Conventry respectively.
8. Tunisia – 13 Medals
Tunisia first participated at the Olympic Games in 1960, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except when they participated in the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics. Tunisian athletes have won a total of 13 medals, four by the great long-distance runner Mohammed Gammoudi in men's athletics, three by long-distance swimmer Oussama Mellouli in men's swimming, two in men's boxing, one in women's athletics, one in women's fencing and one in men's taekwondo. Tunisia won its very first gold medal at the 1968 edition in Mexico city and the medal was won by Mohammed Gammoudi. The second Gold was won in 2008 in Beijing and the 3rd and 4th gold medal was won at the 2012 edition in London. Tunisia has never participated at the winter Olympics and currently ranks as the 8 most successful African team at the Olympics.
7. Algeria – 17 medals
After independence in 1962, Algeria participated in the Olympic Games for the first time at the 1964 Summer Olympics with gymnast Mohamed Lazhari. Algeria withdrew from the 1976 Summer Olympics due to the refusal of the IOC to ban countries who had competed in South Africa amidst its apartheid policies. Almost every nation in Africa participated in the boycott. South Africa itself had been banned from the Olympics since 1964.
