Top 10 Animals That Can Freeze And Come Back To Life
One thing is for certain, when something dies, it stays that way. That’s just how life works. Freezing to
death is one of the most horrible ways to die, however, some in the animal kingdom seem to take
freezing temperatures in stride. Today, we will be looking at 10 amazing animals that come to life after
freezing. Have you ever met someone who is virtually immortal? If not, you better stay tuned for
number one. That creature can survive not only freezing temperatures, but also the inhospitable
vastness of space.
Number 10. The Arctic Wooly Bear Caterpillar
If you live in the U.S., you’ve likely seen wooly bear caterpillars around and perhaps learned to leave
them be, because their “wooly” hairs can be painful to touch. But did you know that one special species
of these cute little caterpillars actually spend most of their lives in a frozen state?
The Arctic woolly bear can survive the polar extremes of the Arctic Circle, Canada and Greenland for its
ability to alternate between freezing, thawing and feeding. This caterpillar has sugars in its blood that
work like antifreeze and protect the cells in sub-zero temperatures.
According to the site Cool Antarctica, this caterpillar will freeze and thaw approximately seven times in
its lifetime before it pupates and eventually becomes a moth during the summertime. Once in moth
form, in other words, when it becomes the Arctic Wooly Bear Moth, it’ll only be alive for a couple of
weeks to breed before dying shortly thereafter.
Ironic isn’t it? It can survive being turned into a popsicle but as soon as it gets its wings, it dies.
Number 9. The Iguana
When temperatures get below 40 or 50 degrees Fahrenheit, cold-blooded animals such as the iguana
can freeze up. This means if they were initially high up in the trees, they’re coming down, as Twitter user
Frank Cerabino captured in his Florida backyard when temperatures dropped in January. But if you think
their dead, you better think again. According to scientists, their blood has slowed down and they’re in “a
lethargic state akin to a deep sleep.” Sounds like me on a Sunday afternoon.
These iguanas are temporarily immobilized by the cold and will be running around again once the
outside temperature, and in turn, their internal body temperature, rises. In the meantime, picking up
this seemingly dead iguana is definitely a no no. Keep in mind, he’s just enjoying a deep rest, and much
like me on a Monday morning, will react defensively when its sleep is disturbed even by the slightest.
Have you ever been bitten by an iguana? Well, me neither but this animal’s sharp teeth makes me think
they hurt a lot.
Number 8. Alligators
The life of a cold blooded animal is very hard, especially if it decides to live in an area where the winters
are freezing cold. But the miracle of life always seems to find a way, and reptiles can be found even in
the coldest of regions. The need to survive have forced them to develop amazing adaptations to survive
the cold. Alligators, however, are a different story.
Air-breathing alligators don’t do anything as fancy as freezing their blood cells during the winter. So you
might be wondering how they get access to oxygen when the water bodies in which they live freeze
over.
Well, they’re able to survive being stuck in frozen ponds with one simple, genius trick: When ice closes
in on their bodies, the alligators stick their snout through the surface. Although they remain immobile in
the ice, scientists explained that they can still breathe normally through their nose until the temperature
warms up.
Not moving on a cold day, sounds like a good way to avoid freezing. Can any one of you try it out and let
us know if it works?
