The world we live in has many secrets we may never fully understand. From the
mountains, to the oceans, the forests, to the open plains, this planet is home to literally
millions of species of animals. For centuries, humans have been telling stories about
what they have imagined and what they have experienced first hand. Legends, myths
and eye-witness accounts, from Sea-Monsters to clones, this is a list of the Top Ten
Biggest and Most Dangerous Animals.
Number 10. Saltwater Crocodile
Saltwater crocodiles are the world’s largest living reptile. The average adult male can
reach a length of more than 5m and weigh 500kg. The females are smaller, clocking in
on average at 3m and 100kg. The biggest ever recorded was captured in the Philipines.
Reported to have killed a man and small girl and eaten several water buffalo, the giant
was named Lolong. Instead of killing the beast, it was decided to keep Lolong in a local
wildlife park to increase tourism in the region. He was measured at 20 ft 3in (6.17m) in
length and weighed 2,370 lbs (1075 kg)! This is the largest crocodile ever officially
measured. Still, some people say there are monsters even bigger roaming the
waterways.
This picture is from 1914. believed to have been taken in Australia’s Northern territory.
Is this an example of one of the world’s biggest and most dangerous animals?
Number 9. The Kraken
When we think about the biggest and most dangerous animals in the world, we always
imaging the Kraken. This legendary Norse sea-monster was said to rise up from the
depths and attack ships crossing between the shores of Norway and Greenland. While
the legend of the giant goes back as far as the 1200’s, it seems that the popular image
of a giant octopus-like monster depicted with many legs rising up from the deep began
sometime in the later part of the eighteenth century. According to legend, the Kraken
has spiked suckers on its gigantic tentacles, which allow it to easily dismantle a ship
and pluck off its crew. It is believed that this depiction is based on sailor reports of a
Giant Squid, a very real deep ocean species that can grow to be as long as 10 m (33 ft).
Squid do have ‘teeth’ or ‘spikes’ on their suckers. Imagine how those sailors must have
felt. Today, in some parts of the world, there are still reports of Giant Squid as large as
100ft in length. It is no wonder the Kraken makes this list!

Number 8. The Hippo
Without question, one of the world’s most
dangerous animals is the Hippopotamus.
Native to sub-saharan Africa, the hippo is
known for its size and its enormous head
and giant tusk like teeth. The hippopotamus
might resemble pigs and other similar land
animals but actually, their closest living
relatives are the cetaceans, which include whales and dolphins, from which they
diverged some 55 million years ago. Hippos are one of the largest living land animals.
Only elephants and rhinos are bigger. The average male hippo can weigh as much as
1500 kg (3,310 lbs), while the females are smaller 1300kg (2,870lbs). Hippos have
amazing jaw strength and teeth that grow to be more than 1 ft in length. They can stay
underwater for extended periods of time and have been known to attack small boats
and swimmers. When threatened or to defend territory, they are known to bite onto a
person’s leg and pull them underwater until they drown.
Number 7. Dragons
Fire Breathing, strong, fierce, skyward, Dragons. Dragons are the stuff of legends
across the world. They appear in almost every human civilization. Considered highly
intelligent, often magical and with the power to control the elements, the dragon
represents the merging of earth and sky. In ancient traditions and philosophies the
ascending and descending energies represented balance in nature. And so, the
dragons represent harmony and balance. They are guardians of treasure, wisdom,
cures, and secrets. They are the stuff of fantasy stories and myths in cultures from the
far East, Europe, and the Americas. It makes one wonder, do they really exist? Anything
is possible in this world. Maybe some day someone will have a fully charged battery and
a good camera to capture a dragon. Until then, we have the imagination of so many
writers and film makers to show us just how majestic these animals are.Number 6. Giants
Believed to be similar to humans but much
larger, Giants were said to have built many of
the great wonders of the ancient world, to
have had advanced technology, and to have
been great warriors with superior weapons.
Some say they came from the heavens.
