I bet this fist-fighting, spinach loving sailor was your childhood hero. I mean, who doesn’t wanna have muscles the size of two bazukas?
Here’s a fun fact by the way; did you know that Popeye was highly televised in the 1940s and 50s as a health initiative to convince young kids to eat their veggies?
Now that’s taking nutrition to a whole other level...well, I’ll admit; I did eat a lot of spinach as a kid because of this fella right here.
The real inspiration of the character Popeye actually hails from Chester, Illinois; a local man by the name of Frank “Rocky” Fiegel.
Frank lived in the early 20th Century, and even though he was small in stature, he was one of the toughest guys around.
He was a toothless fellow who loved to smoke his pipe...oh, and get into a lot of fights, and I mean a lot!
And that’s why Popeye never backs down from slinging his fists.
Nevertheless, Frank had a very soft spot for children, and even though he didn't have any of his own, he was always being the kindest fella to them.
He died in 1947, and was buried in a lot with the headstone marked with the iconic cartoon character.
9. Ursula (Divine)

Admit it, if you are a 90’s baby, then I bet you've watched every Little Mermaid movie and cartoon ever produced!
Boy, did I love Princess Ariel...uhm, and now that I think about it, I might have loved her for the wrong reasons... if you catch my drift…;)
Moving on, while we loved the Princess, I’m pretty sure many of you hated the tentacled villain, Ursula the Sea Witch.
Here’s a fun-fact about her though; did you know that she was actually inspired by actor Harris Glenn Misltead, famous for his ‘80s drag persona, Divine?
In fact, Divine appeared in quite a number of movies spearheaded by auteur, John Waters.
These movies went on to form an integral part of LGBT culture and history. And now that you know this, can you see the likeness and resemblance that Ursula has to divine?
8. Edna Mode (Edith Head)
To this day, I’m still a diehard fan of the Incredibles and literally have all their merch sitting in my attic. Call it the Incredibles lair if you like!
Indeed, this movie is a timeless gem amidst a sea of bland animations that have been released over the years.
And one of the most fascinating characters of the movies was Edna, the eccentric fashion designer who designed the costumes for the popular superheroes.
If you’re a fashion aficionado, it’s a no brainer that people credit Edna Mode’s design to Edith Head, arguably the most fashionable costume designer in the world.
Her signature style had no comparison. With round glasses and the back bob cut, we can pretty much see the resemblance, can we
7. Vultures From The Jungle Book (The Beatles)
The creators of The Jungle Book were pretty excited to get The Beatles to do the voices of the vultures.
However, when they approached The Beatles, that offer was immediately declined by John Lennon.
Despite the refusal, that didn’t stop the animators from modelling the famous cartoon characters resembling John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, and Paul McCartney.
Not only do the vultures look like the legendary members, the movie directors even got them to share a Liverpudlian accent like them.
Now that’s dedication!
