The name coronavirus is derived from Latin corona, meaning crown or wreath itself a borrowing from Greek wreath. The name was coined by June Almeida and David Tyrrell who first observed and studied human coronaviruses. The word was first used in print in 1968 by an informal group of virologists in the journal Nature to designate the new family of viruses.The outbreak was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020, and a pandemic on 11 March.As of 6 Aug 2020, more than 19 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported in more than 200 countries and territories, resulting in more than 712,000 deaths; more than 12 million people have recovered.This video shows coronavirus cases in 2020 (January 21 to Aug 6).
