There are plenty of advantages as well as disadvantages when it comes to working from home. There are mental health and financial benefits of working from home which no one can ignore. However, there are also disadvantages to this concept that cannot be easily overlooked either. Balance seems to be keen here, depending on the person you are yourself.

The first disadvantage is Isolation
Often, people working from home complain of isolation and loneliness because they miss the office environment of working with their coworkers and bosses. Sometimes people start feeling depressed being cut off from the office. The workplace provides a location to meet people and make friends as such many people who are working from home have to be more creative and resourceful in getting to know people and in staying in touch with their colleagues.

The second disadvantage is Difficulty in Monitoring Performance- it is not easy for managers and supervisors to monitor their staffs’ progress and performance without them being in the same office space. This is especially escalated if the job role requires a lot of “background duties” that can’t be monitored on a work’s system.

Difficulty in separating home from work
The biggest disadvantage of working from home is the temptation to engage in household matters since you are at home is often very strong. You may start feeling obliged to clean the home, do shopping, cooking, and get involved in childcare and socializing all while. These cause great distraction from requirements of the job resulting in failure to deliver the desired time-bound results. It, therefore, becomes essential to draw the line between home and work so as to avoid both areas suffering.

There are more Distractions- At home, people have to face an increased amount of distractions. You could be disrupted more than you may think by a noisy neighbors, family or friends who directly bring a big drop in your concentration and productivity.

Work doesn’t end

Work from home in a way means that you are 24X7 in office and are unable to switch off from the office work. You are tempted to work endlessly. People working from home also self impose pressure to prove themselves and their abilities. All these increase the stress and worry levels. Moreover, the lack of physical separation between home and work may add to the pressure to work endlessly.

Increase in Telecommunication Costs- The expenditure of money that you are likely to use your own telephones increases when working from home. As you are not being around any of your colleagues also mean that the phones are used more often.

More Difficulty to Problem Solving - People working from home have to face more difficulties in solving work-related simple problems, such as software issues, become more difficult to fix when you are not in the office as the tech team is not at your hand's distance. It is more difficult and takes longer to try and help someone over the phone than it would be in person.

The decrease in Staff Integration- Working from home will mean that you get involved less with the rest of the team. There is less communication between employees which in turn, may decrease an element of teamwork amongst them. It can also mean that you miss out on “everyday matters” at works, such as daily updates and possible promotions, as you become less involved.

Difficulty sticking To a Routine- There is a great difficulty in sticking to an office routine when you work from home. It is really difficult to mirror your schedule and processes once outside the office.

No second monitor: Office has an energy that your home does not have. There is no second monitor on you supervise your work in the home. While working from home you lack the support of your colleagues and seniors as such you have to sometimes wait for the next hour or even the rest of the day for solutions. All these slow down the work and performance when you work from home in respect to the office.
