Iceland is not known as the land of fire and ice for nothing; the harsh climate has everything to do with it. The nation is in the North Atlantic and is battered by rough seas. Since the island was formed by volcanic eruptions, most of the volcanoes remain active.

About 40 percent of Icelanders believe that elves exist. The island’s folklore is still deep-rooted in stories about “Huldufólk,” which means “Hidden people.” The Huldufólk are said to live in the lava fields.

If you thought that elves are all that Icelanders believe in, you were wrong. The country has a rich Viking history.
