Top 10 Rice Producing Countries In The World
Hello Displorers, welcome back to another informative video and thanks for watching. In this video, we shall be looking at the top 10 rice producing countries in the world. Rice is among the three leading food crops of the world, with maize and wheat being the other two. All three directly provide no less than 42% of the world’s required caloric intake and, in 2009, human consumption was responsible for 78% of the total usage of produced rice. More than 3.5 billion of the world’s population think of rice as their staple food, which translates to at least half of the people living in the world. Because of this, experts do not see a future decline of rice consumption, especially among African and Asian countries. Asian countries produce the most rice worldwide, while countries in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East have shown considerable increase in rice consumption and demand. These countries are also among the top rice consumers of the world, and combine to account for around 90% of the world’s rice consumption.

Rice producing countries are countries where rice is cultivated in large quantities. Rice is mostly produced in commercial quantity in Asia and some countries in South America. Amongst these, here are the top 10 rice producing countries in the world.

10. Pakistan - 7.5 Million Tonnes Per Year
Kicking off at number 10 is this Asian country of Pakistan found in the southern part of Asia producing 7.5million tonnes of rice per annum despite being largely mountainous and semi-arid. Most agricultural activities are concentrated on its banks, as is most of the population and Arable land which is 26.5% of the land area. Agriculture occupies 39% of the workforce and accounts for 21.6% of GDP. Rice is an important Kharif crop as in 2019, Pakistan produced 7.5 million tonnes of rice and ranked 10th in largest rice producing countries. Basmati is long grain rice grown in Pakistan is considered by many to be the tastiest rice. Even though Pakistan is one of the world’s largest rice producers, however climate change is posing significant challenges, with harvests failing and groundwater levels diminishing but still it is one of the top rice producing countries in the world with the help of improved methods.
9. Japan - 7.8 Million Tonnes Per Year
Rice is the main crop in Japan and has been cultivated for more than 3,000 years in Japan. In the Edo period, rice yields were a measurement of a lord's wealth. Japan usually produces a surplus of rice and even so rice production across Japan has fallen by 20% in the past decade despite the fact that there are 1.8 million rice-growing households in Japan. The hills and mountains are covered by rice terraces while woodlands are preserved as a source of compost. The country's mythology is filled with references to rice, and the written character for “rice field” forms part of many surnames. In the name of preserving tradition, Japan's mostly small-scale rice farmers are heavily protected from cheaper foreign competition." There are over 120,000 different varieties of rice including black and red strains as well as white ones. Rice plants can grow to a height of ten feet and shoot up as much as eight inches in a single day. Hokkaido is Japan's leading producer of rice even though the rice grown there has a poor reputation but Japan has other great brands.
8. Philippines, 12 Million Tonnes Per Year
The Philippines is the world’s eighth-largest rice producer with arable land totals of 5.4 million hectares. Rice area harvested has expanded from nearly 3.8 million hectares in 1995 to about 4.4 million hectares in 2010. However, the country’s rice area harvested is still very small compared with that of the other major rice-producing countries in Asia. More than two-thirds or 69% of its rice area is irrigated and 71% of rice production comes from irrigated areas. One of the most significant programs of the government for the rice sector is “The Philippine rice master plan of 2009 to 2013 which aimed at enhancing provincial rice self-sufficiency.” This rice master plan envisions a 100% self-sufficient rice economy by 2013 through improved rice productivity, and increased income of rice farmers. This plan pursues location-specific interventions that can help farmers achieve higher yield by improve productivity toward sufficient yield. These include improvement of the effectiveness and efficiency of irrigation systems through rehabilitation, the use of high-quality hybrid and inbred seeds and farmers’ varieties, integrated and sustainable crop management technologies, the provision of soft loans for the establishment of shallow tube wells and surface water pumps, and delivery of extension suppor
