10. Bengal
The Bengal cat originated as a hybrid of a domestic cat and a leopard cat. With their spotted coat, large size and muscular body, Bengals look like wild cats. They are the only domestic cat breed that has rosette markings. Despite their appearance, they are faithful and affectionate cats that form strong bonds of love with their human companions. Intelligent, curious and agile, Bengals are always on the move: they love to climb, chase and investigate around the house. They are quick learners and can learn tricks like turning on and off light switches and opening doors. Fascinated by water, Bengals can dip a paw under the faucet.
9. Chartreux
Chartreux cats were named after the Carthusian monks in France, who invited them in to protect the monasteries from rodents in the 16th century. These beautiful and rare cats have a large and muscular body, blue water-resistant hair and orange- or copper-colored eyes. Chartreux cats are known for their “smile”: the structure of their jaw and head make them look like they are smiling. Excellent hunters, they are known for their intelligence and interacting ability. These adorable, affectionate and quiet cats follow their people from room to room, rarely making a sound.
8. Scottish Fold
The Scottish Fold originated in Scotland in the Sixties, when Susie, a white cat with unusual folded ears, was noticed by a farmer, who started to breed kittens with this gene mutation. Scottish Folds are medium-sized cats with a compact build, round head and large round eyes; their small ears which fold forward give these cats a mischievous look. Their thick and soft coat can come in different colours and patterns. These sweet-tempered, playful and affectionate cats adapt well to multi-pet households and require a lot of human attention.
7. Abyssinian cat
The Abyssinian, takes its name from Abyssinia (now called Ethiopia), but its ancestors lived along the coast of the Indian Ocean and in parts of Southeast Asia. Abyssinians are slender, medium-sized cats, with a wedge-shaped head, almond-shaped eyes and pointed ears. They have the unique “ticked” coat pattern, that gives them the appearance of wildcats: each hair shaft has light and dark bands of color. Abyssinians are no lap cats: they are active and agile cats that love to play with their toys, jump, climb and even take objects that grab their interest.
6. Russian blue
The Russian Blue allegedly originated in northern Russia and was brought to Great Britain and Northern Europe in the 1860s. These are medium-sized cats, long and slender, with a silky bluish grey coat and brilliant green eyes. The silver tips give the coat a shimmering appearance. Russian Blues are sensitive and reserved cats, that tend to shy away from strangers, but are extremely loyal to their beloved humans. These agile and energetic cats retain a strong hunting instinct and require a lot of playtime; they enjoy jumping, climbing and racing around the house.
