#10. Digital Shifting Artwork Collection
In his Xanadu 2.0 Mansion (more on that later) Gates owns various flat panel displays that react to the personal pins of visitors to display their favourite pictures and artwork. The devices that display the artwork cost approximately $150,000 dollars. The screens are calibrated to guests’ age and gender to select artwork that would appeal to them. This artwork can be rotated with the touch of a button!
#9. A Porsche 959 Coupe
The Porsche 959 Coupe, worth $225,000 dollars, proves that Bill Gates appreciates a sporty roadster as well. The Porsche 959 Coupe is powered by a 2.8 litre twin turbocharged flat-6 engine, with 444 horsepower and six speed manual transmission. Incredibly, Gates bought his Porsche years before the EPA had even given approval for it to be driven on American roads. It sat in customs storage in San Francisco for 13 years before Gates could hit the highways!
#8. Bombardier BD-700 Global Express Private Jet
This jet, purchased by Gates in 1997 is referred to as his “guilty pleasure”, as it is one of the most expensive things he owns, at an estimated market value of $19.5 million dollars. The jet can reach a maximum speed of Mach 1. It can seat 12 to 18 passengers and is outfitted with the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics technology. The private jet has a forward galley, a conference/dining area, stateroom with fold-out bed, and a washroom. It is one of the best luxury jets around.
#7. Grand Bogue Caye Island
In true celebrity fashion Gates even owns his own private island! Gates owns Grand Bogue Caye Island in Belize. Located on Turneff Atoll, it is the largest island in all of Belize. Valued at $25 million dollars it consists of 314 acres and a beautiful beach. The island features water sports opportunities, a gorgeous forest, and prime saltwater fishing spots!
#6. Large Private Library
Next on our list is Gates’ large private library, located in his sprawling Xanadu 2.0 mansion. This is the ultimate book lover’s paradise, as it is 2,100 square feet of books and manuscripts under a domed roof. It features two secret bookcases, one with a bar contained within it, and even includes one of Bill’s favourite quotes from The Great Gatsby on the ceiling. The finest manuscript he owns is Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Leicester, purchased at auction for approximately $30 million dollars.
#5. Luxury Beach House
Next on our list is Bill and Melinda’s gorgeous 5,800 square foot luxury beach house near San Diego, California. His purchase of the beach house, priced at $43 million dollars, was one of the largest purchases ever to occur in the Del Mar area. Built in 1999 by architect Ken Ranchetti it features gorgeous wooden ceilings, 120 feet of oceanfront property, a large pool, and a 10 person capacity jacuzzi.
#4 Xanadu 2.0 Mansion
Check out the gargantuan 66,000 square foot mansion Gates owns in Medina, Washington, the Xanadu 2.0. The mansion is named after the mansion of the protagonist of Citizen Kane, Charles Foster Kane. Half a million feet of lumber and 300 construction workers were required to build the mansion.
It features seven bedrooms, a 60 foot pool with an underwater music system, and a 2,500 square foot gym. The gym even has a trampoline room! Gates can host large and exclusive parties at this facility as it also comes with a 200 person banquet hall! This mansion is perhaps one of Gates’ finest possessions, and well worth the cash as he pays $7 million dollars in property taxes yearly!
#3. Private Art Collection
Gates is a Renaissance man as well as a tech innovator, as he owns a $130 million private art collection. Among the artworks he owns are The Nursery, worth $30 million dollars and Polo Crowds by George Bellows which he purchased for $28 million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in 1999. Perhaps one of the grandest and most expensive works in his collection is “Lost on The Grand Banks”, by Winslow Homer, which he bought for $38 million dollars.
#2. Microsoft Shares
Gates owns $15.4 billion dollars in Microsoft shares. Microsoft was the firm he founded in 1975 in Albuquerque, New Mexico with Paul Allen. Microsoft is well known worldwide for software products that changed the world. Such products include the Windows operating system.
