Bill Gates has been a steady name on Forbe’s list of richest people and he has the gift of being able to double his profits. He is worth about $104 billion. He is best known as the co-founder of the Microsoft Corporation and while in active work at Microsoft, he held various positions such as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer.
Bill Gates and Paul Allen, his childhood friend, founded the company in 1975 and it grew till it became the largest computer software company. He stepped down as Chief Executive Officer in 2000 and announced that he will be focusing more on Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the charity foundation which he and his wife, Melinda, founded. However, he remained the chairman of the company. Between 1995 and 2017, Bill Gates held the top position as the richest person in the world for 18 of those years. In 2014, he stepped down as the chairman of Microsoft Corporation and handed over duties to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. In 2017, he was surpassed by Jeff Bezos, who is the founder of Amazon.

Jeff Bezos is the founder of Amazon.com, an online shopping platform and he is currently worth $116 billion. He worked with and resigned from the hedge fund company, D. E. Shaw, and started Amazon in a garage in Seattle. He shared the idea of starting an online bookstore to his then boss who declined the offer stating he wasn’t interested. Jeff stayed on with his original plan and started selling books. Over the years, Amazon began to expand and include more inventory. It finally became a place to get all you need. It is said to be the largest retailer.
He has been able to diversify in various areas that have aided in the growth and expansion of the company. In addition to Amazon, Jeff Bezos also invests in space technology and is also the owner of the Washington Post Newspaper. His net worth is not from just Amazon.
Number 8 Cornelius Vanderbilt
The Vanderbilt name is one of the most famous names in American history. Cornelius Vanderbilt, at his death, was worth about $185 billion and came to his incredible wealth through the railroads and shipping lines that he built during the 1800s. The Vanderbilt name still carries a lot of weight today because in addition to the railroads and shipping lines, he also founded Vanderbilt University. He expanded his empire after the Civil War and accumulated even more wealth.
Nicknamed the “Commodore”, Vanderbilt is regarded highly for his part in improving and expanding America’s transport infrastructure. He was a shrewd businessman, often seen as cunning and a brute, but many say he was also a builder and less of a wrecker. He began by working with his father on his ferry from the young age of 11. When he turned 16, he decided to start his own ferry service. He was said to have borrowed $100 from his mother to purchase a ferry of his own which he named “Swiftsure”. He ferried passengers and freight, and his enthusiasm and energy for the business earned him the Commodore nickname. At 19, he married his cousin and together they had 13 children.
