Top 10 Scariest Places You Shouldn’t Visit
Flickering lights, strange sounds, and spooky surroundings are all too common for a horror movie. But one thing is for sure – they give you quite a scare. You might even resort to sleeping with the lights on.
So what if you were to visit that place you saw in the horror movie? It’s all fiction, but you might be surprised to know that there exist real-life places that are just as scary if not more. And that’s what we’ll be showing you in today’s video.
#10 Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic
Art is a diverse subject to look at. Even more far-reaching are the materials that can be used to express it. There is wood, ceramic, clay and so on. A wide array of components in our surroundings can be turned into some form of art.
But when it comes to the ossuary in the town of Sedlec, Czech Republic, things become a bit unbelievable. Built in 1870, the monastery’s internal décor is made up of, get this, 50,000 human skeletons! And they aren’t just thrown around.
They were skillfully put together to form various pieces you'll find in any building of this type – candle holders, chandeliers, garlands, candelabras, and so on. In fact, the ossuary’s centerpiece is one giant chandelier containing every single bone in the human body.
So how did this seemingly bizarre holy place come to be?
Reports have it that the land it occupies was once a well-known burial site. So when construction work kicked in, bones were the order of the day with all the digging. Instead of just throwing them away, the church resorted to collecting them ending up with heaps of human bones this way. Close to 100 years later, a woodcarver by the name Frantisek Rint was hired to bring some order.
And that’s how all the bone pieces came to be.
Scary as it may sound, the ossuary is a popular tourist site pulling in about 200,000 visitors per year.
#9 The Screaming Tunnel, Canada
The screaming tunnel is a haunted place in Niagara Falls in Canada. Why “screaming tunnel” though? The tunnel is home to the ghost of a girl who died centuries ago.
She’s not always screaming. Once you get into the tunnel at night with a burning match, you’ll hear the distress sound of her wailing spirit. And it doesn’t stop there. A strong wind will blow through the tunnel effectively extinguishing the match.
The scream is said to be of the final moments of the dying girl from, supposedly, being burned. Different – at least three – versions of the story exist as to how the girl found herself in the horrible situation.
One goes that the girl was attacked by a drunkard who raped, assaulted and proceeded to burn her in a bid to conceal any evidence of wrongdoing. Another tale alleges that the girl was set ablaze by her father who was enraged that he had lost custody of the children after a divorce. The third points to the girl escaping a burning farmhouse.
All these legends have a similar ending – the girl screams her heart out as she burns to death.
