Jungles are extraordinary places with deep secrets, hiding some of the most mysterious marvels ever seen by humankind! There are creatures we don’t yet know about, large swathes of a dense landscape still unexplored, tribes not yet documented, and ancient treasures buried below the ground. People have also wandered into the jungle, never to be seen again. That hasn’t stopped us from exploring them and searching for the lost cities and treasures rumored to be inside. Scientists and archaeologists are still exploring the jungle and discovering bizarre phenomena all the time! With that said, here are the top 10 STRANGEST discoveries made in the jungle!
10. Boiling River

It’s exactly that, nothing near a volcano of some sort just a dangerous river in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon that kills everything that falls into it!! The temperatures get so high and records over 93 degrees Celsius that steam often rises from the surface! The fact it’s not attached to an active volcano or a magmatic system makes it all the more unusual.

Spanish conquistadors searching for gold in the Peruvian jungle were stymied at every turn by poisonous snakes, starvation, and, legend has it, the scalding waters of a boiling river. This fantastical stream sounds like a myth from the oral traditions of the shamans from the area. However, geoscientist Andrés Ruzo actually found it in the remote jungle of Mayantuyacu. “Small mammals, reptiles, or amphibians regularly fall in and are boiled alive,” Ruzo says of the river.

How this miraculous river boils is still a mystery to scientists. There’s no confirmation regarding how the phenomenon came to be, but it’s hypothesized that a drilling company accidentally ruptured a geothermal system, releasing gasses from inside the Earth into the river. According to the locals, the river is a place of huge spiritual power, and natives often gather on its banks to sing songs and pray. This boiling river is incredible just to hear about and is apparently breathtaking to see! I wouldn’t personally want to get near it, my clumsiness might have me slipping into a HOT situation!

9. Vietnamese Tarzan

Some stories are stranger than fiction and the tale of father and son Ho Van Thanh and Ho Van Lang is definitely one of them. Dressed in tree bark and leaves while munching on a rat caught by a complicated jungle trap, this guy looks a little different than Alexander Skarsgård, the Swedish actor who stole hearts in the famous Tarzan movie. It’s strange to tell someone that you’ve come across Tarzan while in the jungle, but this man, Lang, is the closest person there is to claim that title! He was a feral child who learned the survival ways of the jungle and adopted this lifestyle away from modern civilization.

Lang’s father, an army veteran, took him and his brother to the jungle when he was just two years old after the tragic events happened to their family during unrest in Vietnam in 1972.

They built wood houses and lived in treehouses, dressed in loincloths made from tree bark and survived entirely off the land, avoiding any other human contact for four decades!!! They also sourced water from rivers, using a variety of jungle delicacies for dinner, including fruit, honey and a host of meats in the form of monkey, snake, lizard, and frog. Their unique lifestyle came to an end in 2013 after they were discovered by locals who then alerted authorities and forced them to re-enter civilization.
