Contrary to popular belief, the blue whale isn’t the largest creature on earth. These mighty marine mammals are dwarves when compared to every entry on this list. You should already know what I’m talking about since I assume you’ve already read the video’s title, but if you’re still a bit hazy about it, I’m talking about trees.
Yes, trees are the largest and tallest living creatures in the world. Even an average sized tree can be massive, but we’re not going to talk about those. Today we’ll be featuring the tallest trees of them all. Want to find out what is the undisputed tallest of them all? Stick around till the end to find out.
So, without further ado, here are the top 10 tallest trees ever found.
Number 10. Neeminah Loggorale Meena
A member of the eucalyptus family, this blue gum Eucalyptus globulus lives in Tasmania, Australia. Named Neeminah Loggorale Meena, it stands 302 feet making it the tallest known blue gum on Earth. Its unusual and unusually long name means “mother and daughter” in the Aboriginal language.
Blue gum trees and are usually cut down for pulp and eucalyptus oil, so it’s easy to over-log these trees. Fortunately, local conservation laws make it illegal to cut down blue gums over 85 meters tall, ensuring that mother and daughter will be enjoyed by future generations.
Number 9. Sir Vim
There is a group of enormous, incredibly tall trees in the forest some 30 km north from Fingal that has been known for many decades. They are a group of white gum trees and has since been called the White Knights. All of these trees are massive, the tallest one of them is named Sir Vim, which stands just a couple of inches shy of 300 feet tall.
There were several instances that this group of massive trees would have fallen victim for loggers. Fortunately, due to a series of different events, they stand to this day. There was an attempt to cut the trees down in the 1940s – 1950s, but loggers found it to much a hassle to haul them out so they left them standing.
In the 1970s there was the next attempt to cut the trees. Loggers built a road coming close to the giant trees and local forester Des Howe was assessing the potential gain from the cut. It was eventually decided to save the trees and in 1977 there was created Evercreech Forest Reserve specifically for the protection of this group of eucalypts.
Number 8. The Tallest Cypress Tree
A magnificent, yet nameless tree of incredible size grows at the mountain road leading to Kathok Yoesel Samtenling Monastery. This is a famous cypress tree, which may hold a spiritual treasure left more than one thousand years ago. And standing at 310 feet high, it also holds the distinction of being the tallest Cypress tree in the world.
Cypresses are the national trees of Bhutan and every large cypress here is a sacred and much-revered tree. This particular tree, however, is extra special because it is linked to an extremely significant person in the history of Buddhism; Guru Padmasambhava, who was believed to be the 2nd Buddha and a guardian spirit of Bhutan.
Legends state that the Guru escaped from Tibet on the back of a tigress and stayed in a remote cave high in the cliffs of Paro valley, where the monastery stands today. Bhutanese people believe that the giant cypress itself is the walking stick of the guru.
Number 7. The Tallest Giant Sequoia
Giant Sequoias are known to be the largest of trees by volume, but are rarely renowned for their height, which is quite unfair. They are also massively tall trees, with the tallest one measuring 314 feet tall which can be found in the Giant Sequoia National Forest in California.
This still unnamed tallest sequoia was discovered by the well-known local researcher Michael Taylor in 2013. And to protect the tree, it’s exact location has not been made known to the general public. There have been reports of even taller giant sequoias, often reported as reaching heights of 320 feet and above, but none of the reports have ever been confirmed.
