Top 10 Two-Headed Animals In The World

There are some body parts that appear more than once on the same animal. A head isn’t one of them. No matter the type of animals, this vital part is always one – well, that’s under normal circumstances.
But sometimes things happen and an animal gets a pair of heads. In smarter terms, this is called polycephaly and the animal affected is called bicephalic or dicephalic. Naturally, it’s intriguing to see such an animal, and so we got curious.
Today, we bring you 10 reported cases of polycephaly around the world. Here we go.
#10 Bearded Dragon
The former music producer is the owner of the largest collection of two-headed animals according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Among the 22 pairs of heads, there is one for a bearded dragon.
Since they’re two heads, T-Ray has given each a different name; Pancho and Lefty. And according to the animal collector, each of these two heads has its own preferences when it comes to eating.
Pancho is carnivorous as he loves munching on crickets while Lefty is vegetarian, eating only greens. Normally, bearded dragons feed on both insects and vegetation. Their strong jaws are just the required weapons to deal with all insects they come across – even the hard-shelled ones such as beetles.
So if T-Ray’s claims are anything to go by, it looks like the two heads of his bearded dragon are representations of the feeding habits of these reptiles. So each head takes care of the different dietary needs. Which means it’s possible that the heads share other parts of the body.
Besides Pancho and Lefty, Todd Ray has another two-headed bearded dragon called Jeckyl and Hyde. He acquired this second reptile when it was just two months old.
#9 Goat
Two-headed goats are fairly common world over. And depending on where they're born, they can either be a subject of intrigue or fear. For instance, in some parts of Africa, a goat with two heads is believed to bring bad luck. As such, such goats are killed as soon as they're born and possibly followed up by a cleansing ritual.
Around the world, one was reportedly born in Asyk-Ata, a remote village in Kazakhstan. It had two heads that were joined along the skull. While it was healthy and showed all signs of surviving, it died just two days after being born. It was killed by the mother apparently out of fear despite feeding it earlier on.
Another case was reported in China, where a goat went through a 7-hour labor period before the owner stepped in to help. The kid had two heads, three ears, and four eyes. Bad thing is that it couldn’t stand and therefore feeding from the mum was a bit hard. So the owner took the initiative of feeding it through a bottle – and both of the mouths on each head could suckle just as well. Unfortunately, it died four days later.
#8 Turtle
Just like in goats, there are several reported cases of polycephaly in turtles.
The most recent one was on Hilton Island in South Carolina. The unusual reptile was picked up by a Jayme Davidson Lopko who is involved in inventorying sea turtle nests. The hatchling turtle was alive but it couldn’t move because of the two heads. Good thing it was found.
Each of the heads was given a name, Squirt, and Crush.
Another two-headed turtle is kept at the San Antonio Zoo and people love dropping by to check it out. And this too had two names – Thelma and Louise.
According to the zoo officials, Thelma and Louise are distinct but share the same body. So they’re basically twins who didn’t fully separate before birth.
Here are a few other places around the world that have reported two-headed turtles:-
Havana, Cuba in 2005. The species of the turtle was unknown.
Science Museum of Minnesota. The specimen was a dead but fully-preserved common snapping turtle. It was named Emily.
Costa Rica in 2005. The species was identified as olive ridley sea turtle and was discovered by the World Wildlife Fund.
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, United States. The Florida redbelly turtle was called Gege and lived at the park for some time before it was transferred.
While these turtles are a fascinating sight, the condition decreases the already low chances of survival.
#7 Porpoise
While getting two-headed animals for the previous animals is common to some extent, a two-headed porpoise is extremely rare. To date, only one has been found. That was in the North Sea mid-2017.
The porpoise was caught by a group of Dutch fishermen and was already dead by the time they pulled it out of the water. But they didn’t keep their peculiar catch. Instead, they threw it back into the water fearing that it might be illegal to keep the animal. The only proof of their water hunting endeavors being the series of photos they snapped of the animal.
