Most of the schools have stopped corporal punishment, however, this doesn't stop some teachers from coming up with new ways. From psychological humiliation to some old-fashioned punishments, here are some of the worst punishments ever.
Hello and welcome back to our channel. In this video we will talk about the top ten worst school punishments ever. So, let's get started.
Number 10, New Jersey school kids forced to eat on floor -
The students were made to eat off paper liners normally used on lunch trays. Other students who were eating at tables were African American and the kids that were punished were Hispanic. According to sources, the incident took place against a backdrop of discord between the black and Hispanic populations in the impoverished southern New Jersey city.
The incident happened back in 2008, at Charles Sumner Elementary School in Camden. The fifth-grade students were disciplined after one child spilled water as he tried to lift a jug onto a cooler. However, seven out of the fifteen punished children filed a lawsuit later and then won $500,000 for settlement.
Number 9, Lesbian girls sent to fake prom -
A lesbian student in Mississippi was sent to a fake prom when she sued her school for the right to bring her girlfriend to the prom. The girl, Constance McMillen, said that most students attended another dance organized by parents at a secret location and she was not invited to this event. This happened when the girl tried to to overturn the school's policy of banning same-sex prom dates.
McMillen told the magazine that the school had two proms and she was only invited to one of them. She said, "The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn't invited to". According to her, the prom she attended was at a country club and out of the five other students at the country club, two had learning disabilities.
Number 8, Sophomore Punished for Wearing Flag Shirt -
This happened back in 2008 when Jake Shelly, a high school sophomore wore a T-shirt printed with a tie-dyed American flag and the phrase "United States of America, Washington, D.C." The school' assistant principal didn't accept the dress code and felt that it was violating the school’s ethics. The boy actually wore it on 'Hippie Day', which is a part of Dos Palos High School’s homecoming week and it was worn in support of the United States.
The flag shirt was not in support of any particular race or creed. However, the officials of the school didn't consider this and treated it as a violation of the dress code. The student was then forced to take off the shirt and had to spend the day in a bright-yellow shirt that read "DCV: Dress Code Violator". The student had to face severe humiliation and as a result, there was an outcry from the student population.
Number 7, Teacher Cut Off a Child’s Braid -
In December 2009, a Milwaukee teacher was charged with disorderly conduct after punishing a first-grader by cutting one of her braids. This happened when the girl was playing with her beaded braids and the teacher told her to stop. But, she continued fiddling with her braids. To this, the teacher got angry and frustrated. She asked Lamaya to come near her desk by showing her a candy and then, without any delay, she pulled out a pair of classroom scissors and chopped off one of the braids. Then, Lamaya was sent back to her desk crying as the other students laughed at her.
When the girl's mother came to know about this, she furiously confronted the teacher. In reply, the teacher apologized and said that she was frustrated at that moment. Lamaya's mother appreciated the apology but also said the district should seriously question whether the teacher should keep her job.
Number 6, Kneeling on Frozen Peas -
This incident happened in 2015, in China. The girl was forced to kneel on frozen peas for a longer period of time. The girl then took a photo of it and shared it on the internet. The school’s officials got angry for this behavior and expelled her for clicking pictures of the pea damage. This type of punishment can result in severe damages of the skin and can cut off blood circulation. This form of punishment is more common in Asian Countries, but this should be stopped soon. We've also heard cases of students forced to kneel on rice, corn and cheese graters.
Number 5, Locking students in 'Child-Eating' Monster Closet -
This incident took place in Houston, Texas. As a disciplinary punishment, the teachers locked up their students in custodial closets which they nicknamed as the 'Monster Closets'. The closet was actually inspired by a book taught in the school itself.
