Description

According to researchers from the National University of Singapore, the noisiest neighbourhood in Singapore was Serangoon at 73.1 dB - that’s as loud as a ringing alarm clock. Outram and Orchard tied for second place at 72.8 dB with Bukit Timah in the third spot at 72.6dB.

In the study done in 2017, over 50 participants collected 18,000 readings of outdoor noise measurements across 10 weeks using calibrated iPhones as they went about their daily routines. The readings were then mapped to visualise the noise distribution around Singapore.

That same study also found that Singapore’s average outdoor sound level was 69.4 dB, far over the World Health Organization’s recommended level of 55 dB.

An estate’s infrastructure affects its noise levels. For example, areas that are more enclosed with overhead bridges and bus stops trap sound, whereas areas with open fields allow for sound dissipation. Those staying on higher floors in housing estates may be further away from major noise like traffic and construction - but there are fewer physical barriers to block sound. And higher floors are still exposed to renovation work noise.

With every exposure to loud noise, some of the 18,000 hair cells in our ear canals may be lost - and these do not grow back, which may lead to permanent hearing damage.

Researchers suggest using noise control windows and white noise machines, for example.
