Top 5 Female Country-Rock Crossover Acts of the 70s & 80s
Linda Ronstadt
Although known as mostly a rock and pop singer in the ‘70s and ‘80s, singer Linda Ronstadt was one of the most versatile performers of her generation, recording in diverse genres of music. Ronstadt had success on both the pop and country charts in the ‘70s. Her breakthrough “Heart Like a Wheel” in 1974 not only included her first No. 1 pop single, but it also gave her two U.S. country hits: the No. 2 “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love with You),” and the No. 1 “When Will I Be Loved.” Her crossover success continued through most of the decade with “Love Is a Rose,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “That’ll Be the Day,” and “Blue Bayou.”
Dolly Parton
Known primarily for her work in country music, Dolly Parton made her album debut in 1967, attaining success as both a solo artist and with duet albums with Porter Wagoner. Her sales and chart peak came during the 1970s and continued into the ‘80s, with a record 25 No. 1 country singles, plus crossover hits like “Here You Come Again,” “Two Doors Down,” “Baby I’m Burning,” the 1981 No. 1 smash “9 to 5,” the title song to the film soundtrack, and the 1983 No. 1 hit duet with Kenny Rogers, “Islands in the Stream.”
Juice Newton
Singer, songwriter, and musician Juice Newton was one of the most successful female country artists of the 1980s, with 14 Top 10 hits across the U.S. Pop, Country, and Adult Contemporary charts, with six of the songs hitting No. 1. After recording with the country-rock trio Juice Newton & Silver Spur, Newton went solo and had her breakthrough with the multi-Platinum 1981 album “Juice,” which yielded three hit singles: “Angel of the Morning,” the No. 2 pop hit “Queen of Hearts,” and “The Sweetest Thing (I’ve Ever Known),” which topped the U.S. and Canada Country and AC charts. More crossover success came in 1982, with “Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me,” “Break It to Me Gently,” and “Heart of the Night.”
