Between the viper swords (level 2) in White Orchard and the Griffin steel and silver swords in Velen (level 11), Geralt is really in need of a sword upgrade. We list the top 6 swords to upgrade to from the Witcher school of the viper swords. After level 11 until level 30 it makes sense to upgrade through the witcher schools of the Griffin, Wolf, Bear, and Cat scavenger hunts, but for level 3 to 10 players there are no Witcher School upgrades.

We recommend Diethwen, Moonblade, Harvall, Bloodsword, the Gnomish Gwynyr, and the the Tir Tochar Blade for level 3 to 10 players. An upgrade sword around levels 5 to 10 probably makes the most sense. Most of these swords can be picked up in the Scavenger Hunt: Griffin School Gear in Hindhold castle Velen west of Oxunfurt on the south side of the Pontar and at Lornruk tower by the place of power in northwest Velen. Deithwen is south of Fyke Isle in the treasure quest Sunken Chest. Moonblade is found in a locked chest underwater north of Lindinvale, Velen and west of the bridge. The key is in the body next to the chest. The maximum level foes guarding these are level 11.

All these swords are either magic, relic, or master swords with two or three rune slots. They all have bonuses such as critical hit chances and critical hit damages. About half are steel and half are silver. Their exact level depends on the player's level when picked up. Typically they will be 2 levels below the level of your Geralt of Rivia.
