Africa is blessed with a rich bounty of natural resources. The continent holds around 30% of the world's known mineral reserves. These include cobalt, uranium, diamonds and gold, as well as significant oil and gas reserves.
Given this natural wealth, it comes as no surprise that with the tripling of global mineral and oil prices in the past decade, mining has exploded on the African continent.
So, why is it that a continent with such vast potential wealth can remain so poor? It's in large part down to 'Illicit financial flows'. This is due to the corruption of African leaders and workers and poor management of the continent by it leaders.
Transparency International gives voice to the victims and witnesses of corruption. According to transparency internationals report CPI 2019: SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA considered SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA As the lowest-scoring region on the CPI, with an average of 32, Sub-Saharan Africa’s performance paints a bleak picture of inaction against corruption. With a score of 66, the Seychelles earns the highest mark in the region, followed by Botswana (61), Cabo Verde (58), Rwanda (53) and Mauritius (52). At the bottom of the index are Somalia (9), South Sudan (12), Sudan (16) and Equatorial Guinea (16).
