U.S. weekly jobless claims top 6 million for first time
Description
Data from the U.S. Labor Department shows 6.6 million American workers filed for unemployment benefits last week – the most ever recorded, bringing to 10 million the total number of people who filed over the past two weeks. The figure has far surpassed even the highest of estimates by economists. In the same week last year, only 211,000 people applied for benefits. The government last week approved a 2.2-trillion-dollar rescue package that includes a massive expansion and extension of unemployment benefits. The U.S. has over 200,000 COVID-19 cases, the highest in the world, with over 5,000 deaths.
