Since the first case of the novel coronavirus was reported in late 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China, the virus has made its way across the globe—resulting in economic decline, drastic quarantine measures, and thousands of deaths.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has now officially declared the outbreak a global pandemic, and has raised the global alert to the highest level possible.

Because of how little we know about COVD-19 and how quickly it’s spreading, this novel coronavirus is a cause for concern.

So, to find out more about COVD-19, we sat down with two medical professionals: Christine Tait-Burkard, PhD, an associate professor at the Roslin Institute of Edinburgh, and Mohsan Saeed, PhD, an investigator at the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories.

For more information about coronaviruses (we're talking COVID-19, SARS, and MERS), what you can (and should) do to stay healthy, and how well equipped we are to handle the virus as it continues to spread—check out this Elements.

By dubbing COVID-19 a pandemic, the WHO is placing it in a different category than several recent deadly outbreaks, including the recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Zika virus outbreak in 2016 and the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. All three of those outbreaks were deemed to be international emergencies.

"It was rapidly shown to be caused by a novel coronavirus that is structurally related to the virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). As in two preceding instances of emergence of coronavirus disease in the past 18 years2 — SARS (2002 and 2003) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) (2012 to the present) — the Covid-19 outbreak has posed critical challenges for the public health, research, and medical communities."
