What Went WRONG with Minecraft Multiplayer?? (& og-sg.net)

Minecraft multiplayer was very different back in 2010. But thats fine, as the game got more popular, multiplayer evolved, nothing wrong with that. The problem is when these servers got greedy, monetising the server, making everything pay2win, corrupting the original style of minecraft in the process... So what went wrong with minecraft multiplayer?
