Who is "The Turkey Man" Eddie Salter?

Ask a turkey hunter under the age of 30 about Eddie Salter and you’ll likely catch a blank stare in return. Ask Google and you get a generic, bland synopsis of his turkey hunting bio. Ask that same question to a turkey hunting vet and you’ll quickly realize Eddie is one of the greatest to ever walk the turkey woods.

Eddie Salter also known as the “Original Turkey Man” began hunting around his hometown in Alabama at the age of eight. After being coached up in the woods by his father and grandfather at the age of 10 Eddie has tagged his first wild turkey, which he describes as “bushwacked” on a hunt that took several days to complete with his father by his side.

For Eddie, Learning to call was greatly influenced by Eddie’s mother. As a young boy his mother purchased domesticated turkeys for Eddie to raise in hopes he would continue to learn turkey vocalizations, mannerisms, and the other small details that has led Eddie to a wildly success turkey hunting career.

Throughout the 60’s Eddie was building turkey calls and selling them out of his barber shop. Not only did Eddie use his barber shop to move turkey calls but it was also crucial in talking to farmers and gaining hunting permission.

Over the course of the next decade, Eddie began to realize making and selling turkey calls could be a real possibility to make a living within the hunting industry. In 1985, he created Eddie Salter Calls Inc. producing a variety of game calls, scents, and hunting videos.

Salter began participating in competitive turkey calling in 1981 and amassed an impressive list of titles, including seven Southeastern Open Turkey Calling Championships, six Alabama State Championships and two World Open Championships. Named one of the top-10 sportsmen in the U.S. in 1986 and 1989 and with almost four decades of turkey-hunting experience, Salter is recognized as one of the country’s leading authorities on turkey hunting.
