Taking a look at my 2019/20 Bundesliga predictions to see whether Dortmund, Bayern, Gladbach or Lepizig will lift the trophy. This season we are witnessing one of the best title races in Europe in the German Bundesliga, with just under ten points difference from top of the table Bayern Munich to seventh placed Hoffenheim.

Let’s start with Bayern Munich, the current Bundesliga leaders. Bayern sacked Niko Kovač earlier in the season, after finding themselves falling behind the likes of RB Leipzig & Borussia Mönchengladbach. Hans-Dieter Flick has since taken over The Bavarians and taken them back up to the top of the Bundesliga.

The obvious favourite is Bayern Munich and it’s difficult to see them not winning the Bundesliga for the eighth year in a row. Since sacking Nico Kovac, Hansi Flick seems to have returned Bayern to what made them so good under Jupp Heynckes. Setting up in a 4-2-1-3, Kimmich and Thiago control games with Leon Goretzka operating in a box to box role. Bayern attack down the flanks through Thomas Muller on the right and auxiliary left back Alphonso Davies, as they look to create through crosses for Robert Lewandowski.

Julian Naggelsmann’s RB Leipzig have been one of the most exciting sides to watch in European football this season and the likes of Timo Werner & Marcel Sabitzer have brought the results & entertainment into Naggelsmann’s organised setup.

To go with excellent coaching they’ve got supremely exciting players that operate in the final third. The likes of Yussuf Poulsen, Patrik Schick, Christopher Nkunku, Marcel Sabitzer and Dani Olmo are all capable of match-winning moments. But the jewel in Leipzig’s crown is undoubtedly Timo Werner. Only Robert Lewandowski has scored more Bundesliga goals this season than the German, with Werner actually involved in more goals than the Polish hitman.

Borussia Monchengladbach are the surprise contenders this year and after a stint at the top of the table, have slipped down to fourth place. Marco Rose has built a high intensity, modern 4-3-1-2. They look to press aggressively without the ball and if they can’t regain possession they compact the centre of the pitch in their 4-3-1-2. This has made Gladbach difficult to score against and it’s shown in the stats. They’ve conceded the joint fewest goals in the Bundesliga this season (23).

The problem Rose and Gladbach face is their squad is thin outside the first eleven and there’s a lack of a really clinical forward in the side. Whilst Gladbach have scored five more goals than every other team below them in the Bundesliga, they’ve scored 15 fewer than the lowest scorer out of the top three, RB Leipzig, despite having a similar xG to Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund did not have the best of starts in the 2019/20 season, but the signing of Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland has been a breath of fresh air and Lucien Favre’s side are one of the best attacking sides in Europe with the likes of Jadon Sancho & Thorgan Hazard in top from alongside Håland.
