Arsenal completed the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey on deadline day. Let’s take a look at how Thomas Partey would fit into Mikel Arteta’s setup.
Arsenal have had a strong start to the season & ended last season picking up the FA cup, but they needed to strengthen in many areas to get back into the top four and the signing of Thomas Partey on deadline day would put Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal as on of the favourites to make Champions League football at the end of the season.

It’s been no secret throughout the transfer window that Arsenal have been in for a big midfield signing and landing main target Thomas Partey on deadline day shows the backing & trust of Arteta by the club.
During Arteta’s spell as Arsenal manager, he’s used two main systems. The 4-2-3-1 in his early games and then a 3-4-3 after the Premier League restart. Whilst the back three has been the more successful shape, winning Arsenal the FA Cup and Community shield in back to back games, it’s clear that Arteta wants to use a midfield three.
In the bigger games, when Maitland-Niles is brought in at left wing back, the in-possession shape rocks with Tierney pulling to a traditional left back position, the front three staying high and wide and as the two midfielders drop, Maitland-Niles inverts, creating a lop-sided 4-3-3.
And despite the success with the formation, Arteta seems to be pushing Arsenal’s possession shape more to this lopsided 4-3-3.
Without question, Arsenal’s two best midfielders are Partey and Ceballos, which offers flexibility to Arteta. The pair could work as a two, in both the 3-4-3 and also in a 4-2-3-1, as well as in a three. And the combination of their tenacious defending and passing ability opens the door for the likes of Bukayo Saka to play in central midfield if Arteta wants to add more flair and creativity, or adding Xhaka in for more control and stability.
Do you think Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will finish in the top four?
