WisEye Morning Minute: Top Story of 2019 - Lame Duck Session
Description
WisconsinEye Senior Producer Steve Walters and WisPolitics.com Editor JR Ross reviewed the top 10 stories of 2019 in state politics. The number one story of the year was voted to be the lame duck session impacting bipartisanship. Key points from this story include the Supreme Court upholding the December 2019 laws limiting powers of the governor and attorney general, the Justice Department and Joint Finance Committee fighting over oversight of legal settlements, the Supreme Court agreeing to review Governor Evers' budget vetoes, and Republican leaders saying "goalies" must stop Evers' bad ideas. "There's all these threads of tension of what got done, what didn't get done, the budget process, the cabinet, it all comes back to the extraordinary session in December which set this in motion," JR said. Steve then asked JR if he sees any signs of tensions improving in 2020. In response, JR expressed his doubts of improvement and cited the recent standoff with the failure of homelessness bill package to pass due to uncertainty on the price tag. Steve added that a release from the Department of Revenue said that GPR tax collections from July through November are up 7 percent.
