In US news and current events today, women health care workers are on the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19. Former Virginia health official Lauren Powell says it’s imperative, now more than ever, that people listen to their local health officials on how to slow COVID-19’s spread.

As of March 12, 2020, there are more than 1,300 cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. Some hospitals have already faced shortages in staff, equipment, and space.

Powell says stress on the health care system puts women workers and their patients at risk. Powell says workplace rights, including paid sick leave, are critical in this time, and should be made permanent.

The CDC recommends implementing personal protective measures, including frequent sanitization, staying home when sick, and avoiding contact with large crowds of people.
