Youngest prime minister in the world offers snowball to Croatian prime minister: EU presidency
Description
34-year-old Sanna Marin, the youngest government leader in the world, has handed over a snowball to her colleague Andrej Plenkovic, Prime Minister of Finland. It's a sign that Croatia is now holding the rotating presidency of the European Council.
For the past 6 months Finland was holding EU's rotating presidency.
Croatia takes over the presidency of the European Union, namely the Council of the European Union, from today, 1st January 2020, for a period of 6 months.
Croatia's first-ever presidency in the European Union comes at a "critical period" for the 28-nation bloc. The EU's newest member could end up in charge of launching the bloc's post-Brexit negotiations with Britain.
Croatia, which joined the bloc in 2013, is celebrating 29 years of independence and the prime minister said the presidency is proof that the country has made the leap from a war-torn nation to a stable international actor and member of EU and NATO.
