Description

thank you yuzuru for these past ten years. what a journey it has been. (you know the drill — turn up your volume and read below for details!)
please be aware that this video contains clips of injured yuzuru during the years 2014, 2017, 2018! (no footage of the actual injury)

wow. i've always felt the whole "labor of love" feeling whenever i finished a video, but truly, this video really felt like the peak? the culmination? of that feeling. sure, i haven’t been here for the whole decade (only half of it), but what a journey it has been. he came into this decade as an ambitious, promising young skater, fresh off of a junior world title, and he leaves it as a two-time olympic champion, two-time world champion, four-time grand prix final champion, record breaker, and an influential figure at the top of his sport, inspiring countless scores of people.

please be aware that this is definitely not a comprehensive overview of his whole entire career this decade (was very upset i couldn’t fit his 4t-3a in this video, i tried sooo hard). he has accomplished many, many things, but i had to find the right balance between text and the video itself. i didn’t want to the text to obscure the main message of the video because the viewer was too busy trying to read text that appears for 0.3 seconds (a real struggle fitting all this text in already, trust me). i know this video is pretty text-heavy than my usual, but i want the text to highlight his accomplishments. honestly this video was a challenge. i’m usually one to edit according to the music, but this time i had chronological restraints that honestly drove me up the wall. i wanted to reach the perfect build with the music so a lot of my favorite moments couldn’t be fit in. hopefully, i accomplished recapping this for all of you in an inspirational way.

making this made me appreciate so many firsts that yuzuru has accomplished this decade, both personal and groundbreaking for the sport. you could see how much i struggled to fit the later years into the video (definitely shorter than the beginning first few years lmao) because i got carried away by how much there was (2012 worlds, i’m looking at you). if you’re wondering why i decided to include clips of injured yuzuru...well, i didn’t want to ignore it. i feel like it was just as much a part of the journey as anything else. i’m sure it drums up a lot of bad memories for both yuzuru and us, but i think there is also merit in remembering it. we shouldn’t forget the personal setbacks and triumphs yuzuru had over the course of this decade. it wasn’t a smooth ride. i know we all know about his injuries, but i think it deserves a part in this story. i actually debated a lot about including them. agonized even. but it just felt wrong to gloss over it, so yes they are here in this video. briefly, but they are there.

and like, major thanks to google’s 2019 year in search because honestly this video was not in my plans at all. iike 0 thoughts. i was thinking about working on another video in my free time (shhhhh) but then i watched the google video and i was like SHIT the decade is ending i actually gotta do something memorable. and then this started lmao. i think my favorite part of the videos were the parallels/time lapses from when he was a young un in 2010 to where he is now as a goat in 2019. and obviously the parts in the music where it picks up massively because that never fails to make me emotional.

anyways, i will not stand for anyone calling yuzuru “washed up” or that “his time is over” when he has already done so much more than so many of us. the decade may be ending, but that doesn’t mean his dreams and ambitions have. and i’m not just talking about figure skating related ones. whatever yuzuru chooses to do with his career and life later. what an impactful existence in this world that we have been so lucky to be alive at the same time to witness.
