It's #SuperbOwl weekend!
Zion has documented several species of owl in the park, but the spotted owl is one of our favorites! These owls live deep in narrow slot canyons that have been carved into the sandstone. The canyons act like secret hiding places for these birds, allowing them to avoid the heat of summer. The tall walls of these canyons allow very little sunlight in, keeping them cool like air-conditioned homes. The canyons are green and lush and support a variety of life, including tall trees, rodents, and a quick lizard snack.
The spotted owl is a superb owl!
