What is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus is not a new virus it has a very large family of viruses that may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, there are many coronaviruses that cause a range of respiratory infections such as MERS, SARS.
The world is currently going through a pandemic of a dangerous disease called COVID-19.
COVID-19 are transmitted from animals to humans, this coronavirus strain originated from a seafood market in the city of Wuhan in China, at the end of December of 2019.
There are two ways to measure the proportion of infected individuals with fatal outcomes. The first is the infection fatality ratio (IFR), which estimates the proportion of deaths among all infected individuals. The second is the case fatality ratio (CFR), which estimates this proportion of deaths among identified confirmed cases.
The original WHO numbers give an estimate of the Case Fatality Ratio (CFR). The new CDC numbers represent the Infection Fatality Ratio (IFR).
Initial media reports of a 2–3 percent mortality rate for COVID-19 are inflated, and the actual figure is much lower than this.
A large degree of uncertainty surrounds this issue due to the same factor that prevents accurate counts of infections: unreported cases.
