This video is specifically for people who have been laid off, moved to part-time or who work at a startup
For those of you old enough to remember the Great Recession as a major moment in your life, I’m right there with you. It happened in 2008 and I graduated from college in 2007. That’s probably warped the way I see business opportunities forever. Since I couldn’t find the right job and frankly nobody wanted to hire me, I had to learn to fend for myself, and that’s when I started to learn how to buy and sell websites and make money full-time online.
Unemployed
- First of all I’m sorry, this is hard, no matter what way you slice it
- Step 1 is getting on unemployment. The $2 Trillion bill has got a least something for you
- If you’re watching this video, it means you have internet and a compute, which is all you need to re-invent yourself
- You can learn to code, you can learn how to make money online, you can learn a skill in any industry that is going to be recession proof
- Things will get better before they get worse, but when this does all end, and you’re applying for jobs, you can tell your future employer that instead of getting down on yourself about how bad things are, you did the only thing you could, you educated yourself for this new world
- I’ve got a link down below with industries who are hiring now, top ones are: Zoom Twitch, Twitter, Twilio, Roblox, TikTok, Qualcomm, PUBG, Paypal, Palantir, Nvidia, Northrop Grumman, Medtronic, Lockheed Martin, eBay, Doordash, DocuSign
- In addition to these flashy companies, think about what people will always need: toilet paper, paper towels, waste management, nuts and bolts, medical equipment, liquor, food, water, entertainment. These might be boring jobs, but they’re safe and that’s what you may need now
Part-time
- You’re in a kind of limbo situation, and if you’re a millennial or Gen-z, you or your friends are already doing a side-hustle. 50% of Americans have side-hustles, so with your newly empowered time off, you’ve gotta pick yours.
- The way I see it is either you’re riding this out, waiting for your full-time job to come back, so in this case you gotta develop the best side-hustle that fits with a full-time job
- OR you spend this time to change careers or skills. I spoke with a friend on a Zoom chat last week and she’s learning to code for free online. She’s already built a working version of Yelp as his first project
Startup
- So either your startup was wildly successful pre-lockdown or it was on its way there.
- What you have to remember is the theory of sunk costs. This is what I had to remind myself when this all happened. We had spent 1.5 years building an amazing travel photography experience, and that all vanished in 1 day. I was devastated.
- But thanks to the healing effects of time, I’ve found perspective.
- Let me name some companies for you: Instagram, Slack, Venmo, Uber, Pinterest
- These were all startups created during the last market crash in 2008.
- If you’re a startup, you’ve got to thoroughly evaluate the market. If people radically change how they act and live after this, then maybe you need to pivot.
- Slack, which is my favorite tool ever, originally started out as a game company and Slack was just a side-project to help them communicate better
