A lot of people think of animals as beneath humans, that we, as a people, are at the pinnacle of life on this planet. Not necessarily. Some animals possess abilities that we humans can only dream of. Abilities that we so want for ourselves, we imagine ourselves having them, by creating superheroes.
These animals don’t have to imagine anything, because they already have superpowers. Let’s meet some of them shall we?
From an insect master of chemical warfare, to a creature that has unlocked immortality, here are 10 animals with real superpowers.

Number 10. The Bombardier Beetle
Chemical warfare has long been considered inhumane and most countries in the world have come to an agreement never to use it even in times of war. However, this mutual restraint doesn’t extend to the animal kingdom. Many animals use chemicals either as weapons or as a way to defend themselves from predators, but not all of them can create a chemical reaction that can literally cause an explosion.
The Bombardier Beetle is one such creature. Tiny in stature it might be, it hides within itself a defense mechanism so effective, it can deter predators many times its size. This tiny little beetle has chemicals stored within its body. When it feels threatened, it mixes these different chemicals which causes a very violent reaction much like an explosion. The resulting reaction forces hot, burning chemicals to be expelled from the beetle’s body, directly toward any would be predator. Many predators have since learned to stay clear of this natural chemical reactor.

Number 9. The Mantis Shrimp
Have you ever seen One Punch Man? It’s a Japanese Anime and manga series that tells the story of an extremely overpowered superhero that can dispatch it’s enemies with just one punch, hence, his name.
The next entry on our list may not have the same god-like punch, but for it’s diminutive size, it’s punches sure pack a wallop.
Mantis shrimps are a type of tiny crustacean that inhabits most of the Earth’s oceans. It quite looks like any ordinary shrimp save for two things; two little fists that looks like they are wearing, for lack of a better descriptor, boxing gloves. Made up of the same material as the shrimp’s exoskeleton, these tiny appendages do serve a purpose; that is to deliver such a devastating punch it has been known to break aquarium glass.
When the mantis shrimp punches, it’s fists accelerates to the speed of 80kph. To put that in perspective, that’s right about the same speed of a .22 caliber bullet.
This little crustacean uses this ability both offensively and defensively. It regularly attacks larger crustaceans and uses it powerful punch to break open their hard shells to feast on the juicy flesh that is inside.

Number 8. The Dung Beetle
At first glance, the dung beetle looks quite unremarkable, and not to mention yucky. This beetle is born, lives, plays, and eats in dung. You can think of them as nature’s garbage collectors. Cattle ranchers have even been known to scatter these tiny little things in their fields, to help control the accumulation of cow feces.
How come the dung beetle makes our list? Does it hide some amazing ability that is not commonly known? Well, yes it does. Did you know that, pound for pound, the dung beetle is one of the strongest animals in the world? This lowly insect has astonishing strength, being easily able to lift up to 2000 times its own body weight. I guess when your life revolves around pushing around giant balls of dung all day, such enormous strength is required.

Number 7. Tardigrades
Indestructibility, probably the superpower that most people dream of. When we think of someone or something to be indestructible, I bet you’d never think that a creature so tiny would be the only thing on this earth that would possess it. But yet, here they are, so tiny that you can’t see them without the use of a microscope, yet so resilient that they are found to thrive in the harshest conditions on earth.
Tardigrades are microscopic animals that can take whatever you can throw at them, and then some. They have been found not only in the coldest regions of the arctic, but also deep in the ocean around lava vents on the sea floor, withstanding both heat and pressure. They can survive for an undeterminable period of time without nourishment, and could even stay alive in environments completely devoid of oxygen. So, if someone tells you that immortality and indestructability are just confined to the pages of comics, tell them about tardigrades.
