Antarctica is one of those places that belong to the popular ideology of the world. A white stage that we are all capable of recreating in our minds but that very few have seen. The Antarctic continent (whose name means 'opposite of the Arctic') is the southernmost territory on Earth, containing the geographical South Pole and covering an area of some 14 million square kilometers.
It was first sighted in 1820, and it was not until 1895 that the first landing by a team of Norwegian explorers took place. The icy surface and the harsh weather conditions have made Antarctica one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, but also one of the most interesting and studied.
Number 10 - The Blood waterfall
In the middle of this frozen continent, explorers discovered this reddish liquid that flowed into the water and could be mistaken for blood. They were shocked at this site, and it raised a lot of questions. An Australian geologist first discovered the blood waterfall in 1911, and since then, there was an inquest to find out about this incredible phenomena.
Researchers guessed that the water might be reddish due to the high level of iron, but they were unable to substantiate their claims. Before 2018, it remained a mystery to the world.
The world waited until 2018 before a definite explanation of the discoloration of the water was made public. An underground lake close to the waterfall with a heavy concentration of oxidized iron was responsible for the reddish colour of the waterfall. The reddish water from the underground lake flowed into the waterfall, thus, changing its original color to red.
This bloody waterfall still exists in Antarctica as we speak. If you ever visit Antarctica, the blood waterfall is a place to be.
Number 9 - The Hidden City
By now, you would have heard of the thousands of lakes underneath the ground in Antarctica, but the idea of an underground city may seem strange. Antarctica is home to an underground city that has been the subject of debate for several years.
Different theories aimed at demystifying this city have arisen, but scientists suggest that this may be the lost city of Atlantis. This is not the first time mysterious cities have been associated with the lost city of Atlantis.
I wouldn't blame scientists that think that this hidden city in Antarctica may be the lost city of Atlantis because if it were you, you would think the same. Until concrete information about this city is made public, we can only hypothesize. History books made us understand that the frozen town of Antarctica we know today was once a warm continent. It was as warm as present-day Los Angeles until the advent of the ice age. In other words, people may have inhabited that city 12,000 years ago until the era of the ice age that stifled life out of the once bubbling city.
This city that existed before the ice age could be Atlantis, the mythical city founded by people who were half-god and half-human. But how did scientists discover this hidden city? There are many shreds of evidence that points to the existence of this unknown city. One such evidence is an image taken by Google Earth. The photos showed a pyramid that stretched out of the tundra. There are several videos to confirm that, indeed, Antarctica is home to this hidden city.
Number 8 - Crude Oil
For countries like the United States, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and other oil-rich countries, they make billions of dollars annually from the sale of oil.
But who would have thought that a deserted continent would have a natural resource like oil? This frozen continent boasts of crude oil that, if explored, can fetch the continent millions of dollars daily.
Would oil exploration be possible here? After oil was discovered in this continent, the Madrid Protocol signed a treaty to ban all forms of commercial mining in the continent until 2048. Environmental concerns were sighted as the reason for halting oil exploration until 2048. After this agreement, all interested parties in the research of oil had to sheath their swords until the agreed date.
Despite the agreement, there is an obstacle to oil exploration in this continent. The quantity of ice in the soil and the proximity of this continent to industrialized areas are the significant banes of oil exploration in Antarctica. The A-factor would certainly not permit oil exploration in this continent.
Apart from the revenue oil generates, it has devastating effects on the environment. Antarctica will never remain the same if oil exploration commences here.
